Another country, or territory, covered today, as we visited Gibraltar.
We set off early from Pinar and drove inland, rather than following the coast. We climbed up through valleys and across high up planes on the A-2226, finally meeting the Autovia Jerez Los Barrios and finally Gibraltar hove into view through the smog/mist.
As we had visited the isthmus a few years ago, we thought that we knew what to expect...
Busy would be an understatement, so, after fending off the pigeons, and eating the mandatory fish and chips at Roy's, rather than climbing the rock, which we had done before, we decided to try and drive around the headland. We firstly tried the west coast and got tied up in roadworks and a closed tunnel.
After extracting ourselves from this predicament, we tried the east coast, via the top, travelling clockwise. This route was far more plausible, passing under the water purification system to the southern most tip, Europa Point, with it's Mosque (Ibrahim-Al-Ibrahim) and it's views of the mountains of North Africa just visible over the sea fret (see the video below).
The return trip, along the coast to Tarifa with it's better views of the African shore, then, taking the CA-8202 down to Bolonia, Barbate and home.
