View by Date or Latest First Next All Entries Tuesday 7th August 2012 View the Photo Gallery Last full day at Mont Dore, and we are going to make the most of it... got up late, good start! Battery flat on the camera... and so it goes on. At last, after a quick charge of the camera phone, we are off. The plan is to drive to a point midway between the Telepherique du Sancy and the Funiculaire du Capucin, park the car then walk up to the Telepherique. After that we would walk the Western side of the volcano and back down to the car via the Funiculaire railway. The walk to the cable car nearly put us off this walk before we had even started it! The steady incline sapped our enthusiasm almost as much as the tarmac hurt our feet. After 30 minutes we arrived at the back of the 'French' queue! It didn't actually take that long to get to the ticket office and we were soon buying ice-creams at the top... Why do I always insist on buying one covered in chocolate? Five minutes later, a trail of chocolate shards and melted ice cream smeared both me and my camera, as well as leaving a trail more suited to the beach than the mountains. Next, the battery ran out on the camera! Hmmm! Also, I didn't realise that there were so many people in the whole of the Auvergne. So we decided that the 'route difficile' would be the best way to go. After negotiating a narrow ledge of a path above a 300 foot drop with French children bounding around like mountain goats, we then climbed up a near vertical pile of rocks, to find one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen. A man, walking with difficulty the other way, as he carried his small and obviously incapable dog to the top of the mountain. We also encountered people running down the mountain, which in itself is a recognised sport, but with a floppy hat and short shorts things seem to have gone a little too far! The scenery, however was amazing. So many colours, so many flowers and so many Cicadas, it was a wonderful experience. We witnessed the scrambling of the mountain rescue helicopter, which whisked someone off to hospital, it's so easy to do oneself damage on the mountain, but why on the path to the car park? We walked the second side of the valley the easy way, starting at the top and going mostly downhill. The final decent was made on the Funiculaire railway, which Julia preferred over the cable car. Mind you, I have blotted from my mind the trudge back up the 300 feet to the car which not only made the feet sore, but gave us both sunburn. Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 5 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining Monday 6th August 2012 View the Photo Gallery Today started damp and cold (10C) with a promise of sun this afternoon, so we footled around the caravan: washing up, cleaning and deciding that we would go and walk to a couple of waterfalls and a lake this afternoon as well as trying to get the washing dry. Our neighbour told us that there wouldn't be any fire (lightening) in the mountains today and that the sun would come out in the afternoon, which tallies with the Weather App on our phones - Oh! How wrong can one be!!!. We are sat inside the caravan with the heater on as it's still only 11C and the rain gauge is set to persistent. The clouds are tumbling off the hills opposite the campsite, obliterating the normally tranquil mountain tops and replacing them with mysterious and dangerous places where Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' books would feel at home. After eating Croque Monsieur, purchased from an Intermarche in the next town as Mont Dore was closed for lunch, we decided to leave the washing, drying on the lines, and head out to visit the race course, which had filled most days with the sound of cars revving their engines, sounding more like a swarm of bees than cars, as their noise reverberated off the mountain slopes - I really enjoyed driving up the course, it bought back memories of days when I used to do the same thing in my Austin Healey Frog-eyed Sprite. We then continued our drive to our pitches name sake, 'Le Cascade du Sauf du Loup' which roughly translates as 'the waterfall of the safe place of wolves', which, with about a 200 metres walk from the road and a climb of about 20 feet, made for one of the easiest walks we have done so far this holiday. We then drove on to the Lac du Gurery, a round lake previously at the centre of a volcano now surrounded by a ring of mountains. A walk around the Lake was halted by the onset of rain and the knowledge that, for the second day, the clothes were getting rinsed. However the flora we saw on the banks of the lake was so diverse and interesting, you wouldn't be surprised by the 'floral tribute' to the area from most of the photos taken today. We returned to the campsite, wrung out the washing and made three attempts at using the tumble dryer, failing each time, to beat fellow campers to the single drier available to the 90 pitches on site. At 16:00hrs, the sun came out as did the washing for a couple of hours, then, just to irritate, with a rumble of thunder as an announcement, it rained on and off for the rest of the day. So, for the second time this holiday, we ate inside the caravan. If the weather relents and does as it is forecast to do, tomorrow, our last day at Mont Dore, will see us back on top of the mountains and using both the Funiculaire railway and the Telepherique to take us up to and down from a walk between the two on the opposite side of the valley to our campsite. If the weather misbehaves, a trip to the supermarket to stock up with more of the local wine and perhaps a visit to a Cheese Cave on the 'Route du Fromage' would be more in order. Today, excitement of excitements, it's washing day. With the threat of 18mm of rain and thunderstorms, this probably sounds a little on the side of lunacy, but one has to do what one has to do, doesn't one? So far the rain has skirted the campsite and the owner shrugged and said that it probably wouldn't rain, so here we are at midday with a bottle or two of beer and a line full of washing, watching the sky grow darker by the minute. The eagles are screeching over head and thunder is rumbling in the distance. There, that's the dramatic bit over with, it had to be done. This afternoon we are planning a drive out to Besse and Super Besse, part of the Tour de France two years ago, a steep part at that, just so that when the Tour is on next year we can say that we have been there, if the route passes there again. In a bit, we will un-scrunch the map after yesterdays walk and plan a walk for tomorrow. Not so challenging I expect, but still more exercise than I have been used to over the past few years. There is a road that passes behind our hedge at the campsite and continues over the Col de la Croix de St Robert, as things have come to pass, this weekend is also the weekend that the local Auto Club de Mont Dore is holding a hill climb from the valley on the other side of the col to the top. We can't hear the cars, but the spectators, inspired by their sport, are practicing their skills both on their way up to the course and back again, down to the town. While mostly quiet, the peace is occasionally broken by the revving of engines, the changing down of gears, the squeal of tyres and the accelerating of their supped up cars as they wend their merry way. Hopefully the hedge will contain them if they get it wrong! So with the washing, left to finishing its drying on the pitch, we set off to Besse and Super Besse. Super Besse was, somewhat disappointing, if not soulless, designed mainly as a ski resort, the only thing I could see to use was the toilet facilities then back into the car and return to Besse. We pulled into one of the many free car parks and walked into a narrow ancient fortified town. Rue de l'Archer, Rue du Sabotier and many other descriptive names took us through the narrow streets past a local cheese shop... stop... back up three paces, open door, go in, spend 8 Euros on Cantal and Salers cheeses, then continue the tour. An hour well spent. On our trip back to the campsite we pulled over on to the side of the road and took a couple of photos of yesterdays walk, did we really climb all that! Then the rain came, and hoping that it might have skirted the washing we drove into a violent rain storm with visibility of just a few metres. The rain continued all the way back to our pitch, where the washing hung dejectedly, on the washing line. The path we took yesterday was from 300 feet below the far right of the photograph along all the tops to the far left. We then took the cable car down to the valley, on the far side of these hills, then walk down the valley and back up to 300 feet below the far right of the photo, to the campsite! Supper tonight is Roast Chicken on the 'Cobb' in the thunderstorm which is raging around us. The Cobb for those of you that do not know what one is, is a BBQ/outdoor oven. It is designed so that it can stand on a plastic table or be picked up and moved without fear of burning yourself. We tend to use the Cadac (a gas BBQ) for BBQ's and save the Cobb for more exciting dishes e.g. roast dinners. The chicken took 1 hour 30 minutes to cook and was perfect with salad and baguette and a local wine. The local wine took on a different persona when we came to the cheese course. The cheese, which we bought earlier in Besse, had such wonderful flavours. The wine, Cuvee des Volcans, changed from a good wine to collaborate with the cheese to build a whole new flavour. After the meal the Cobb sat in the rain with its lid off to cool down and was still glowing some 40 minutes later. As we said yesterday, today's expedition is a challenge in more than one way. Firstly the walk itself will be challenging - If I had known how challenging, I would have re-planned it and gone a different way! Secondly, Julia is frightened of heights and with a planned trip in a Cable Car it should be fun - If I'd known how steep some of the edges of the paths were, I would have realised that Julia may have got used to height by the time we descended. Photo 1 - Our half way point, from the campsite. Photo 2 - Our route to the half way point (still at the campsite!). Photo 3 � Julia leads the way up Roc de Cuzeau - 1737metres high a climb of 1,640 feet! Photo 4 � a view back to where we have walked from, across the Plateau de Durbise Photo 5 � After dropping down into the Coll de Cuzeau we face our next climb up the Puy des Crebasses � 1762 metres about 1,000 foot climb. Photo 6 � A sheep we passed with its head in a ditch � Shows how warm it was! Photo 7 � Looking back at our route so far Photo 8 � Stopped for lunch with a view over the vallee de Chaudefour towards the Cascade de l'Aigle where eagles, peregrines & ravens hang out in abundance. Photo 9 � The next step up to the Pan de la Grange � 1720 metres about a 600 foot climb. Photo 10 � Julia looking back over part of the route � it sounds easy so far, but it is now approaching beer time or 15:00hrs Photo 11 � Smell the beer? It's getting closer; we can see the brollies at the bar. Photo 12 � Finally a flat walk at 1780 metres to the beer! We pass under the peak of the mountain as we scuttle on our way! Photo 13 � We made it � any thoughts of views and the next step out of the window for 20 magic minutes! Photo 14 � The steps up to the summit � all 860 of them taking us up to 1886 metres a climb of 347 feet and bloody hard work, Julia left me behind! Photo 15 � Julia reaches the top � I give in and threaten to go down without getting there! The high point of our trip! The views were unbelievable! Photo 16 � In all the excitement I failed to photograph the trip down in the Telepherique but here is a view looking up at it. Julia was fine with the trip down and showed no fear at all � next challenge a ski lift (joking) Photo 17 � A part of the trip neither of us had thought much about, how to get back to the campsite! The 2km walk down the busy main road was a little disheartening as every step down hill meant another step up to reach our goal! Photo 18 � The Grand Cascade at 1270 metres meant a climb of 689 feet up a ridiculously steep, wooded path in the beginnings of a rain storm. No wonder this entry has taken so long to write, we were worn out (not the way I put it!) by the time we go back to the camp site at 18:30hrs, 8 hours later. Bacon sandwiches, cup of tea and beer, not in that order or the same cup, but we were tired enough for it not to have mattered. View the Photo Gallery After uploading the diary entry last night, I wandered along to reception to order the bread for the morning and was informed that the last time for ordering was at 17:00hrs, I looked at my watch, which I haven't worn for 3 years and returned to the caravan a little disgruntled until Julia informed me that it was 19:00hrs!!! We left the site at 11:00hrs. This holiday has been a succession of �Wow's�, each site for a different reason. The two and a half hour drive to our next campsite was, in itself, a succession of �Wow's�. Even the Motorway just North of Clermont Ferrand took us up to over 1000 metres above sea level, and the view of the volcanoes and Puy de Sancy, was amazing. The drive from the town of Mont Dore to the Campsite, Le Camping du Grand Cascade, caused a few raised eyebrows, not many caravans of this size get this far up and the site is occupied mainly by tents and campervans. The site is, as all the campsites have been this holiday, beautifully kept and has an abundance of hot and cold running showers, toilets and a Jacuzzi. The pitch is probably the biggest pitch we have had in the more than 16 years since we changed from tents to caravans. We have brilliant free wifi which has to be accessed near reception except if you have a magic gismo like we have when we get full power some 200 metres away from it! After setting up the pitch, we found that we had left the remote sensor for our thermometer on the leg of the caravan at the last campsite... now we don't have one!! We took a stroll to the Waterfall after which the campsite is named, a 3km stroll up about 500 metres and back down again, then the same in reverse. In doing so we scouted out tomorrows walk which will take us hill walking across the tops of three or four volcanoes finishing at Puy de Sancy, then down the Cable car to the bottom through the town and up the valley to the Grand Cascade and back to the campsite. After that we would walk the Western side of the volcano and back down to the car via the Funiculaire railway. The walk to the cable car nearly put us off this walk before we had even started it! The steady incline sapped our enthusiasm almost as much as the tarmac hurt our feet. After 30 minutes we arrived at the back of the 'French' queue! It didn't actually take that long to get to the ticket office and we were soon buying ice-creams at the top... Why do I always insist on buying one covered in chocolate? Five minutes later, a trail of chocolate shards and melted ice cream smeared both me and my camera, as well as leaving a trail more suited to the beach than the mountains. Next, the battery ran out on the camera! Hmmm! Also, I didn't realise that there were so many people in the whole of the Auvergne. So we decided that the 'route difficile' would be the best way to go. After negotiating a narrow ledge of a path above a 300 foot drop with French children bounding around like mountain goats, we then climbed up a near vertical pile of rocks, to find one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen. A man, walking with difficulty the other way, as he carried his small and obviously incapable dog to the top of the mountain. We also encountered people running down the mountain, which in itself is a recognised sport, but with a floppy hat and short shorts things seem to have gone a little too far! The scenery, however was amazing. So many colours, so many flowers and so many Cicadas, it was a wonderful experience. We witnessed the scrambling of the mountain rescue helicopter, which whisked someone off to hospital, it's so easy to do oneself damage on the mountain, but why on the path to the car park? We walked the second side of the valley the easy way, starting at the top and going mostly downhill. The final decent was made on the Funiculaire railway, which Julia preferred over the cable car. Mind you, I have blotted from my mind the trudge back up the 300 feet to the car which not only made the feet sore, but gave us both sunburn.
