View by Date or Latest First Next All Entries Saturday 18th August 2012 View the Photo Gallery Last full day in this site and very little has happened. Not I hasten to add because there was nothing to do, but rather because the temperature forbade anything other than gentle exercise. At 11:00hrs the temperature had reached 33C and by 13:00hrs the magic 38C (100F) was reached and still the mercury rose. I believe that it reached 41 or 2 C and only now that it is dark and the air has cooled down to 27C, that the countryside has come to life. The cicadas, grass hoppers, beetles and any number of flying things have started to make a racket!!! There is a tawny owl hooting and a sheep bleating woefully in the distance. We did manage to go out in the air conditioned car for a drive, but getting out was more than we could bear. We drove over to Jouss�, a pretty little town with parking on the green under some plane trees. With the air conditioning set to 'Arctic' opening the door caused some distress and a shortened walk round the square ensued. We then drove on to Ch�teau Garnier which also looked an interesting place to visit if the temperature hadn't been bouncing around the 39C mark. We didn't see any ch�teau, but there was a river running through it and plenty of older houses with interesting architecture to wander around. Then we headed back for cold showers and a sit in a darkened room to try and gain some sort of normality before BBQing parts of a chicken, a cow and a pig! The caravan is secluded behind the barn, and the adjacent house is an explorers dream come true. Firstly, it's cooler than the rest of the known world at present, secondly it used to be the village bakery and still has the huge bread ovens and grain store. Nosing around we found some strange anomalies in wall thickness and used our imagination to try and work out where the missing feet had been lost. I'm sure that the cellar should be a lot bigger for the size of the house, but couldn't find another entrance. It must be time for bed now as I can hardly see the screen for the audience of beasties covering it. The night sky is full of twinkling stars, and almost as many lace wings fill the awning! Today we will be visiting Civray Farmers Market, to see if there is anything of interest. The market place, outside Saint Nicholas Church, is small but busy and within a few feet we have bought 3 melons and a string of spectacular garlic. Further on we bought a litre of raw, unpasteurised milk from the farm and some goats butter. We are having our evening meal at Valerie's tonight, so no need to buy the beautiful fish or the beef, pork or chickens that tempted us, so quickly back to the car and head back to the 'campsite' to keep the butter and milk fresh. Didn't quite take the quick route back as we saw a side road! This took us through winding country lanes, past beautifully kept farm houses, neat rows of sunflowers and maize, through Champniers then on to Sommieres sur Clain and back through Saint Romain to the 'Campsite'. As we will be departing here on Sunday, I have taken a few photo's of our very private space near Civray, Enjoy. � �� � � � � � � � � � � � � Tonight we had a meal with Valerie, Curry, yummy! The plan didn't go quite as we thought it would, but when does it? Last night was cool, about 10C, and although we went to bed early at 22:30hrs we slept in and didn't get up until 10:30hrs today. Missed the bread van, but there is nothing unusual there! After showers, we both went down to Charroux to collect deux baguette et trois croissant and back for breakfast at 11:20hrs!!! Arrived in Civray at 12:05hrs to be greeted by a closed town, it's lunch time! Ah well, we wanted to look around anyway, here was 2 hours presented to us with nothing else to do. Saint Nicholas's Church, the focal point of the town square, is amazing from the outside with carvings all over the front and around the doors. We walked in to the porch, nothing here to look at, contemplated the two doors and nearly decided that we wouldn't bother. As we past the Intermarch�, we notice that a number of the surrounding shops are closed and shuttered. The Intermarch�, all except the supermarket part, is closed! "What day is it?" Julia asks me. "Wednesday 15th" I reply. Both of us realise at the same time that August 15th is the f�te of the Assumption and France goes to church! Oh well, next best thing is a drive around Civray to find an 'Opticien' for tomorrow. Very pretty town with two of the afore mentioned shops in the main square. After returning to the house, we turned the SatNav on to take us to Oradour sur Glane, which it totally failed to do! In fact it packed itself up and took itself on holiday to a remote part of the sub-ether to hide from us! So out came the manual SatNav, (Julia with a map) and we set off to eke out this interesting place. The route took us through a town called Confolens, probably a pretty town normally, but when it holds a Fete on a Fete day the whole place grinds to a halt and the Deviation signs are unnecessarily vague. We negotiated the town via a few lanes and small villages and finally JuliaNav announced that we had reached our destination!!! Oradour sur Glane is a town which the Nazis exterminated on 10th June 1944, killing some 642 men, women and children. The town has been kept as it was, and is now open as a memorial to those who died. The atmosphere is haunting and unsettling to say the least. The town is nearly totally destroyed, as the Nazis on completion of their work, tried to cover up their deeds by burning and blowing up the remains. The church brought tears to my eyes as this was the place in to which the women and children had been herded, smoke bombed and machine gunned then it had been set on fire killing all inside. Only one woman survived the slaughter by climbing out of a window. The silence was only broken by a few children who did not realise where they were, people say that the birds never sing there and we didn't hear any during our trip. Moules Frites for supper tonight as a thank you to Valerie. Julia's not feeling too good today, so we visited Charroux, then SuperU and back to the caravan for lots of liquid. Charroux is a beautiful place with a lot of old buildings and a huge tower in the middle near the 16th Century covered market. Well worth a visit on a hot day with little bars and restaurants should you feel the need for sustenance. Moules Frites was a great success, Valerie appeared with a bottle of wine and 'les frites' at 19:00hrs and we all said Bonne Nuit at 23:00hrs. Today we shopped, sunbathed and gardened. The Pyracantha now no longer goes up into the roof space, the front door no longer requires a machete to negotiate the path (You may have picked up by now that I am somewhat prone to exaggerate!!!) and Julia's back is one shade browner. Off to Valerie's for aperitifs in a moment, then BBQ, Beer and Bed. Just back from Valerie's, what a drunken evening that has been! No BBQ, just straight to bed! The caravan is moored next to the old barn behind the house, where the barn owl lives and the next door neighbour has been around and offered us an aperitif tomorrow night. So we are set for a quiet 7 nights here. The sky is blue, the clouds are decreasing, the temperature is going up and all we can here are the insects in the undergrowth. There are some huge black bees which I'll try and photograph, which are the size of a small pterodactyl! and flies that look like wasps, also huge, cantering around the garden with the humming bird moths.
