View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries Wednesday 29th October - Toussaints View the Photo Gallery Time for a paddle. We set off for the Ile de R�. We set the fuel consumption to 0 and with a full fuel tank set off on a trip to the beach. If I had known that it was 105 miles I would probably not have gone, but instead we travelled at a steady 55 mph to Niort, a quick sprint down the A10/E5 and on to La Rochelle. over the bridge and through the meandering villages on the island until we found a suitable car park (free!) and went for a quick walk along the sand amongst enthusiastic surfers and sunbathers. We rolled our trousers above our knees which still got wet as we paddled. We also found on our walk, a strange, but dead sea creature... can anyone identify it? � We�reached the Phare des Baleines, the Lighthouse of the Whales, situated at the end of the island and sat in a caf��drinking expensive beer, before heading back the 105 miles to the caravan. I am really pleased to announce that the car managed an amazing 62 miles to the gallon�over the whole 210 miles, who says that big cars are thirsty?� No comments Add a comment You will be adding a comment to this post as a guest. We went for a drive around the neighborhood then gardening, sunning ourselves and read until it got dark. No internet, no phone, no television, no mains electric and yes, the battery was fully charged by 10am every morning of our stay, even when it rained. The road was closed so followed the diversion and approached the town from an unfamiliar direction. There were two bread shops in the town and they took it in turn to open for the morning trade. The first Boulangerie was closed, so parked the car and walked up to the second shop, this one was not just shut, but shut down! After asking in a couple of shops, I realised that I was getting nowhere, so drove to Savigne and bought the necessary from an artisanal bakers there, and very nice it was too. Valerie, the next door neighbour and previous owner of the house, came with the keys to the house, just after I returned. Friday 1st November, she elluded, was�Toussaints day (All Saints Day) and all shops will be shut. Because of this we decided that traveling home and changing campsites that day would be inappropriate, so made the decision to do the whole trip back to the ferry on the Saturday instead. We arrived in plenty of time and once the�operator�had signed us in, then signed us in a second time, but with a caravan, it obviously wasn't big enough, we sat in a queue until loading us on to the ship. The trip across was misty, so not very interesting. It wasn't long before we�descended�in to the bilges with the other eager�passengers�to locate our car and caravan. We had set the SatNav up in Dover, and�without�a worry in our heads, we set off down the N/A216... The sign post for the A16 had been knocked down by someone and propped up on the side of the road on�an orange box... We noticed that things were not going as they should, when we started heading South East, rather than West as planned! The Autoroute des Anglais, we also noticed, was taking us East around Paris, rather than West around Rouen! We turned on to the D77 then on to the D157. Only about 50 miles wasted so far. Our arrival time at our destination was now 5pm, not 4.15pm, Ah well, worse things happen at sea, or so the saying goes! We continued along the D517 for a few hundred miles until, at Montreuil, we joined the A16 and on we went on our merry way.� Some time later, I asked where Abbeville was, it took us a few kilometres to realise that we were once again heading for the East side of Paris!!! At Armein, we took the E44, once again heading towards Rouen. We took the A28/E402 to Rouen, or was it Hell? The main bridge had been destroyed in an accident with a lorry, so we were all diverted along the river bank along with the population of Northern France and crossed the Seine four bridges down. The SatNav now said 6.30 arrive at destination!!! Le Mans, Tours and Poitiers slipped slowly by with a few hold ups, but nothing much. The toll tag beeped every so often and a barrier or two went up and down, with out us having to do anything and finally on to the N10 in the dark turning off to Civray on to the D948. One little 7 mile detour around the lanes, courtesy of Tomtom, which finally bought us to roads we knew all too well, and our destination La Chapelle Baton at 7pm. We drew in to Mrs T's brothers back garden, outside the kitchen window, plugged in to the mains water and drainage, and cracked open a bottle of beer. I spend the morning: filling the car with diesel, awnings and cooking implements; updating the TomTom (you would have thought I would have learned by now!); checking the tyre pressures, on the car and caravan; designed some volunteer forms for an AGM I'll be missing; confirmed a couple of bookings for the Community Centre for childrens birthday parties; and finally, putting the kettle on to welcome Julia home to a house full of things still to do! An hour later, at 13:30 I reset the�mileometer�to zero and off we went, leaving the house in the usual state of disrepair! Tonight we will be staying at Black Horse Farm, Kent, not one of our usual haunts! The drive to Kent was uneventful, arriving just after 5pm. The Solar Panel is booked in to be fitted at about 10:00hrs, it's now 12:05 and a quick phone call confirms that they will be here in 30 minutes.� The Solar Panel was purchased to allow us to stay at more places without the extra cost of plugging in to the mains supply. It is an 80 Watt panel, which I assumed that I would be fitting, but with the state my shoulders are in at present, I handed that chore over to the experts!� The fitters arrived and the solar panel was fitted without too much hassle and the electric extension from the garage was unplugged and put away until Christmas, when the fridge will be required!� 24 hours for the silicone to set and then we'll be off.
