View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries After 31 years of Married Life - 05/04/2017 View Photo Gallery for 05/04/2017 Yes, after 31 years of married life, we asked ourselves this morning, are we doing the right thing, after all, selling the house, getting rid of most things we own, what should we have done differently? After a couple of seconds of deep thought we both collapsed laughing. "OK where are we off to today?" We enjoy our history and scenery, so we set course for a town just north of Foggia, called Lucera, a hideously modern town with an superb, ancient history. Our goal was the early Roman Amphitheatre dedicated to Augusteo and built between 14 and 2 BC. We arrived just as they were closing for lunch, so, with two hours to kill, we set off for a tour of the local countryside. Narrow lanes dissolving into narrower cart tracks, beautiful views, Eagles overhead (couldn't get the camera out in time), olive groves, deep rich fertile soil, Italy, when it tries, can be really beautiful. After filling the car with diesel, we headed back into town, stopping off briefly to walk through the beautiful town park to look over to another of Frederick II castles. After 2 castle attempts yesterday, we decided that we'd just do Roman today. We drove back to the Amphitheatre and realised that we had misunderstood the lady who told us to come back at three... we sat in the sun for 30 minutes until a man let us in without paying, we'd have to pay at the end of our visit as he didn't have the key to the office. The site is really impressive, with it's underground chambers, which housed the Gladiators and wild animals used during the games and shows. 126.8 meters long and 94.5 metres wide, it was capable of seating an amazing 16 to 18 thousand people!We walked around and posed in Roman style, the only people in the attraction, for a good hour before heading home to cook our celebration supper of home made pizza No comments Add a comment You will be adding a comment to this post as a guest. The old town of Siponto and the castle of the superbly named Manfredonia, named after King Frederick the II (called the One-Eye), one of the Swarbian invasions rulers from the 11th and 12th centuries... We left the campsite at 11:00hrs after 2 days of doing nothing and drove the to the archaeological site of Siponto. We parked in the FREE carpark and entered the FREE archaeological site. What a wonderful experience, thanks to Edoardo Tresoldi, who desired to portray the man and his surroundings. The galvanised wire cage depicting the outline of the Roman building exposed after years of archaeological excavations, was unbelievable, awe inspiring brilliance! Also, just to add to the flavour of the site, he depicted people exploring it with us, all life sized in the same wire mesh. The Basilica di Santa Maria di Siponto, the church and the 'Basilica Paleocristiana di Siponto', the ruins and artwork, stood awaiting our scrutinising. Firstly, being free to enter, it was already high on our recommended 'Places to visit' list, so let's see what it has to offer. The architectural qualities were well defined and well preserved. The remaining paintings and mosaics well displayed and unspoiled. We wandered around the church then down the steps outside to see the crypt, which, unfortunately, was locked up. Undeterred, we walked around the well protected ruins of the basilica, under the life sized artwork. We then walked through the visitors centre, a modern building with a few vending machines and toilets.The spring flowers were abundant as we passed through a gate on to the overgrown archaeological site. I'm sure in the heat of summer, when the weeds have died back, the ruins of Siponto would show themselves better, but for the time being we had to wade through 20mm of weeds to view ruins without descriptions as the signage had succumbed to the Mediterranean summer sunshine. We continued along the path, passing between the disused railway line and a sports centre. At the railway crossing we turned left and walked down in to the modern Manfredonian suburb of Siponto to the church of Santa Maria Regina, which graced us with a midday chime, exactly the same one as entertained us in Pelinos, Portugal, last year and the year before, obviously bought from the same electronic stock! The church was locked up, so we headed back through the park and the car to go on a search for an ATM, as with €10 in our pockets, we were feeling aware of our foreign roots. One presented itself and stocked up and feeling secure once again, we headed off in search of Frederick II's Fort in Manfredonia.We found an available space and walked over to the castle, as we approached the door, I realised that I had left the wallet with our recently acquired cash, securely on view in the car! We followed the well trodden round trip to the car and back to retrieve the wallet and, on our return found that the castle was closed for renovations! Undefeated, we pointed to a town on the SatNav and set off along the coast towards a town of Mattinata. We were nearly there when the spirit took me, and I turned right, uphill towards a town called 'Monte Sant Angelo'. We climbed up the winding main road, with spectacular views over one of the many white painted towns of Spain... Hang on! This is Italy! The towns here are as white, as beautiful and with as many narrow roads and unexpected steps as any we visited in Spain. The caves in the hillside and rounded roofed Truly type buildings, added to the rugged hillsides, some above sea level. We finally arrived at Monte Sant Angelo. On first sights we both thought that we'd probably drive straight through. Tower blocks dominated the hilltop, grotesque in appearance and overwhelming in size. We followed the main road through the town, continuing upwards. We stopped at the side of the road to decide what we would be doing next. The signpost ahead pointed left to the 'foresta umbra', which looked promising. We started off again, but something made me turn right instead of left (another Doctor Who Reference!!!) We climbed a short slope into the centre of the town and, there in front of us, stood a castle, with a carpark beckoning us in. My heart dropped as a man approached and demanded €5 for parking! I paid up and ignored the laughter from the Italian, who was seemingly mocking us, parked next to us. We walked to castle entrance and the sign said that it'd be opening in 20 minutes. We returned to the car and got the replacement battery for the camera and walked down in to the town. What a gem we had found, totally by mistake! The 13th Century 26 metre high bell tower, was just the start. We walked into a courtyard and the entrance to not only a church, but the museum. The doorway was magnificent and opened on to a descending staircase. Down we went, passing old wall paintings and some ancient graffiti (1690) until we reached the Church of the Apparitions, set back into the rock of the hill side. We tried the museum, but it was firmly closed, so we resurfaced and found the back way, up a flight of steps to the castle of Mont Sant Angelo, a well maintained and reconstructed castle from 1491, which was, by now, open. €2 each to enter, a bargain. It was the best €2 we have ever spent. For the price of an ice-cream we spent a good 90 minutes exploring, and nearly getting lost, in the castle and its maze of tunnels and extraordinary views over the national park of Gargano.After getting back to the car, we ignored the SatNav's instructions to return home the same way, instead descending by the northern route, into a beautiful fertile valley, along the SS272, then the SP57 back to Manfredonia and, after a visit to the shops, back home. Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 10 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining Castel del Monte - 01/04/2017 View Photo Gallery for 01/04/2017 As today we were planning a drive south to visit the Castel del Monte, an 8 turreted citadel from the reign of Emperor Frederic II built during the 1240's, we were up and ready to go early(ish!)... then the toilet needed emptying, the flush needed filling, the water tank needed filling and the herb garden, which is doing really well, needed watering. So, a little later than hoped we set off, stopping only to sort out the recycling at the bins. The trip there was interesting. we took the inland route, away from the sea, and the temperature was soon soaring to 27°C. We climbed slowly up as we headed southwards until we reached the entrance to the castle, which was closed off with barriers! We read the various signs and, after drawing a blank we followed the blue "P" signs 900 meters back down the road, where we paid the man a huge €5 to park the car. He then pointed to an orange bus and indicated that we should go there. We stood in a queue and when we showed our tickets to the driver, he pointed to the gift shop and indicated that we should go and buy a ticket. I, at this point, lost the plot and stomped off. €5 for parking in a grass field and €5 for the bus, they must be kidding, we'll walk! We walked the 900 meters back up the hill to the entrance and followed the path up through the trees, until we reached the castle at the top of the hill, passed the usual gift shops selling the same old crap. I didn't look, but it wouldn't have surprised me to find a whole wall of Pinocchio dolls, the continents favourite child! At the entrance we joined the queue whilst they extracted another €14 for the two of us to go in. I didn't mind paying this, there would be lots to see inside. Fascinating indeed, but what a disappointment! The 8 octagonal towers are very different to anything else we have seen, but the lack of anything inside, except for two display cases, with not a great deal in them, the place was bare of anything. Ah well, the views were good and the walk was needed. We headed back to the car. We approached the coast at Bari, skirting by on the SS16, then on past Trani. on the north side of Barletta we turned off on to the coast road, passing huge salt pans and mountains of salt. The SatNav showed a blocked road, but obviously, not trying to sound clever, failed to sort out an alternative. When we reached the the closed road, which looked like a bridge about to collapse, we turned left and the SatNav threw a wobbly "Turn around when possible" We continued up the road, following a group of vehicles, who looked like they knew better than the SatNav. "In one kilometre, go around the roundabout fourth exit". We turned immediately right following the diversion signs. After about the SatNav ceased its sulking and told us to continue straight ahead. We followed the diversion to the right back down to the original coast road and turned into the campsite, Camping Lido Salpi. We were shown around the campsite by the owner, a little sour faced man, and chose a pitch. After settling ourselves in, we asked about the free 90-100% coverage and were told that the WiFi point was by reception. We sat outside for half an hour in the warm sunshine drinking cups of tea, until we started to get bitten by some of the largest mosquitoes I have seen in a long time, the drone of their winged dance screaming in our ears. Later we walked down to reception to send Nicola a happy birthday video, but the free WiFi needed a password and the office was closed, well there was no one in it but the keys were in the lock! We decided that a walk down to the beach was a good move. The beautiful sandy beach with views of Manfredonia, the local town and the hills of the National Park of Gargano, standing some 1000 metres above it.
