Well, the Christmas holidays are over and our support team (Caravan Servicing 4U
) have now got their work cut out.
Today we placed an order for:
- 2 sets of brake shoes
- 4 single use hub bolts
- Hitch assembly
- Stabiliser AKS 3004
- Chassis Bolts
- and a replacement LED Front Marker light
For those of you who have not been following our progress, the reason for this order has been a while in the making and the roads in Albania and Montenegro finalised the partial destruction of the towing assembly.
The frame which holds the Hitch assembly to the chassis has split around the bolts both on the top and the bottom of the frame (and before the more knowledgeable caravanners of you ask, the nose weight of the caravan is 90kg and the tow ball on the car is rated at 120kg, so exactly the weights suggested by the manufacturer).
One of the two bolts holding the Stabiliser and hitch to the caravan had sheered on our way through Montenegro, caused by a combination of incredibly poor and unbelievably mountainous main roads. This was replaced in Albania with a bolt from an undetermined place and torqued to an arbitrary amount, by a friendly and enthusiastic Italian who refused to accept payment for the work carried out.
The frame split due to the strain exerted on it as the 90kg nose weight of the caravan levered the housing apart. Physics caused much of the damage. We have therefore decided to replace the stabiliser as well as the hitch assembly as, who knows how much strain has been put through it.
One consolation is that no damage has been done to the chassis.
So now it is in the hands of Caravan Servicing 4U
and we will await delivery of the parts sent to us from the UK. I will then supply you with a step by step and detailed account of the replacement of the front end of a caravan!
