So, today is our last day in the Auvergne. To celebrate, we decided to take a stroll from the campsite up into the woodland opposite the site entrance. Before we had even left the campsite, we were joined by a Goldfinch. We walked up the road for a couple of kilometres to the path on to the tree packed hillside.
The ancient, lava stone paved, road cut diagonally up the hill through natural oak woodland. Wild flowers, butterflies and insects flowed before us, like a bow wave on a sailing boat. The particularly hungry mosquitoes nibbled mercilessly at uncovered skin as the heat built up to an intolerable high and the humidity neared the 100& mark.
At the half way point, we were joined by not one, not two but three eagles, calling and circling overhead. they soon left us as we walked back to the campsite through the wonderfully forested slopes.
There are so many walks and so many things to see and do, we will be be back.

Walk - move at a regular pace by lifting and setting down each foot in turn, never having both feet off the ground at once. Today's Mountain Walk started at , when we parked our car in one of the many huge free car parks in the ski resort of Super Besse. We always start these walks with a large rucksack each. Not necessarily full of the usual waterproofs, survival gear and other paraphilia usually found in mountaineers rucksacks, however with a waterproof top and 3 litres of water each, a sandwich and an apple and a few survival necessities, we started the climb out of the valley up to our goal of Puy de la Perdrix at that's a climb of over . The first was level as we passed under the ski slopes of Super Besse, we then started to climb, following the service tracks created to serve the needs of the various ski lifts. We rose quickly over the town and lake below us until we were looking down on top of our previous walk, around Lake Pevin, the volcanic crater and the volcano of Puy Montchal.We passed the last remanents of snow as it clung on in desperation in the ever increasing heat of a June day. We were passed by a herd of Bighorn Sheep and, to our surprise, a cyclist! Buzzards and Choughs flying overhead and the views getting better and better as the Auvergne opened up around us. We reached the top of the cable car, the Téléphérique de la Perdrix, with vague hopes of buying an ice-cream, but it was securely locked up until... Oh! Next week!
We continued up towards the top of the Puy de la Perdrix and, on the observation platform, sat and ate our lunch with a view of several 10's of kilometres spread out before us. After absorbing as much of this as our brains could take, we climbed the last to the summit and looked north over the beautiful valley of the Hot Oven (Vallée Chaudefour). The top of the valley, just below us, a mass of broken rocks and land slips with a mass of volcanic material sitting on a thick layer of sedimentary deposits. Apparently, after the volcanoes of the region had been formed, many 100's of thousands of years ago, the land mass sank in to the sea. When it was pushed up by new volcanic activity, the remains were exposed as we see them today, where the winters snow and ice are slowly reducing them to rubble.The walk back down to Supper Besse was easy, following a well walked path. taking us around the town and back down to the foot of the mountain with only 50 metres to walk on tarmac to reach the car.

We arrived at the carpark for Lac Pavin, a huge car park with no one in it. We donned walking trainers, rucksacks and set of up the steps out of the car park. We soon met the road and Pavin its self, a large meromictic crater lake (A meromictic lake has layers of water that do not intermix). It is the deepest lake in the Auvergne at deep, 700 meters in diameter, with wooded side of mostly beach with a few pine and just a few silver birch. We followed the path anti clockwise around the crater until we reached a path signed to Puy Montchal a volcano reaching , above Lac Pavin. The climb up was easy, although the weather was very hot, which dampened the forehead somewhat.After admiring the views and eating our Cantal, Blue Auvergne, tomato and ham baguettes, we headed down a different way and back to the car. We drove from the campsite, about to a local town called Besse, well actually, Besse en Chandesse is its full title, which confused us a little until we worked it out
Besse is an ancient walled town in the Auvergne, with narrow streets wobbly buildings and a 12th Century Church to add to the flavour. There is a 'Fromagerie', which we visited 6 years ago with an amazing collection of cheeses for you to buy, with a grumpy French lady who feels obliged to make you stand outside, if the shop is too full. Unfortunately, the shop was not open today, although we did see the lady who runs it and a load of cheeses being unloaded from a van near by. I'll have to write a blog about it on Saturday if the shop is open. In the mean time, to satisfy our love of French Cheese, we purchased some Cantal and some Blue Auvergne for lunch later.After looking around this beautiful town, we returned to the car and set off for Super Besse, a ski resort and the beginning point of a number of mountain walks, some of which we will be attempting over the next few days. After checking out some of the parking places and starting points for the walks, we headed back, taking the scenic route, down the back roads, to the campsite.
After a cup of tea and some of the cheese we purchased in Besse (ABSOLUTLEY AMAZING!) we did what we do best and set out on foot to visit the Cascade de Saillant. well worth the walk! The mountain stream drops over a ridge of lava, left from when the areas volcanoes were active, and falls around 20 feet. A side shoot feeds an old water mill, unfortunately disused now.We followed a road, and signs for a Dolmen. The road turned to a track, then to a path winding up an ancient roadway, still partially paved and walled with volcanic rock, to the fields on a plane above and to a Dolmen and numerous burial mounds. We had to return down the same pathway to the river, but then we crossed the main road to see what the village of Saillant had to offer. Unfortunately it wasn't a lot. The church was locked up and held together with a steel strap and any other historic buildings were lost to private dwellings. One road, with a sign saying the road of the ancient school, led to some closed gates.There were however a couple of statues and a fountain which were interesting, but with no information, not interesting enough.The highlight of the walk home was the appearance of a Honey BuzzardOn returning to the campsite we recovered from our gentle stroll with a couple of beers and a swim in the heated pool. Our next stop is in the Auvergne at a campsite called Camping La Vallée Verte.
We awoke to the sound of drizzle peppering the roof of the caravan at a time we don't normally acknowledge 06:55hrs., with a fine mist over the bed as the roof light was open. We were soon up and dressed, in time for the heavy rain to start. The Weather App on my phone, one I rely on most, told me that the rain would stop at 8:30hrs and start again at 10:00hrs. At 8:30hrs., on the dot, the rain stopped and, for a short while, three minutes I think it was, the sun shone. As we were about to hitch up, at 9:45hrs, the heavy drizzle started up again. Ah well, I suppose it did say it wouldn't rain!
We left the campsite at 10:00hrs and filled with diesel at the Neto, outside the gates and were on our way soon after. down the road we were stopped by a melee of hazzard lights and cars in strange positions. The rain had made the roads slippery and they had claimed a victim. No damage to the person and not much to the car, thank goodness. We drove on towards Lyon, or as the SatNav renamed it Lion! Here we sidestepped the city to avoid the Crit'Air Zones (Emissions control around Three French Cities). and joined the lorry route heading towards Clermont Ferrand. For a time we were positioned behind a Belgium Glass lorry with a heavy load of glass on board. 10 km/h up hill 90 km/h down hill! This did give time to photograph this town on our way up hill We arrived at the campsite at 14:30hrs after a drive, to a warm welcome full of much needed smiles from both the owners, Franck and Catherine, who offered a large pitch opposite the swimming pool (heated to 28°C. We were soon settled in with a beer in hand.
