View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries Flu, Lost Keys some good walks between 19th and the 24th September 2017 View the Photo Gallery 19th September 2017 - Firstly the saga of the lost keys. It could have been either of us, but I'm so glad that it was Julia not me who lost them! Somewhere in Luxembourg city lies a spare car key and a spare caravan key which fell out of Julia's pocket, somewhere on the walk yesterday. No drama, we'll sort out some new ones when I get rid of this cold that has suddenly redeveloped overnight! The walk, when we finally emerged from the caravan was going to be around the hydro electric reservoir just up the road. When we go there, the roads had signs saying no vehicles except residents so we climbed the viewing platform and walked about 500 metres down the road and back. Then we returned to the caravan to drown my sorrows with a Trappist Beer. 20th September 2017 - The need to get out of the caravan outweighed the argument presented by my sneezing and temperature. So, we set out on a short(ish) walk of some up through the woodland opposite the campsite entrance then through beautiful farmland to the local village of Walsdorf, with it's little church, which was built in 1862. It also boasted a communal outside washing area and water supply, which was now used for soaking the willow for basket weaving. 21st September 2017 - OK so today my temperature was a little high at and feeling like an old damp and dirty sock, Julia dragged me out and forced me in to a 45 minute walk around the walls and wonderful views of the fairytale castle in Vianden, situated on the Luxembourg, German border and just a few kilometres from the campsite. Walk distance 22nd September 2017 - Still feeling sock like, today's walk was as much as I could manage, a different walk, in to the local village passing a pond with Dragonflies, passing orchards (if that's the word) of Walnut trees, with fruit dripping from every branch. Then a short up hill then back to the campsite through the forest.. A beautiful meal out in the campsite restaurant's last night of the season, finally taught me to ignore all illness and enjoy life, even if you do feel like a dirty damp sock! 23rd September 2017 - You can either let the bugger win, or you can take the bull by the horns and say 'Sod you flu, you are NOT the master of me!'. So, when we woke this morning and I felt so much better we thought we had better take the bull route. So before I started feeling grotty we donned walking boots and rucksacks and headed out on a brilliant walk to Brandenbourg a good walk, Not much of a castle when we got there, closed when it said it was open, with lots of builders tape and fencing in view.The walk back was as good as the walk out, with good paths and tracks to follow and flora and fauna to keep you guessing. 24th September 2017 - Not to let a good idea go to waste, today's walk to the Fairytale Castle town of Vianden at (I thought less!) seemed like a walk not to miss. We were correct, the walk through the farm land and down to the River Our was spectacular, following a footpath along a natural ridge of hard slate, then down a narrow twisting path to the bottom. ant the view up to the Castle The steep walk up, out of the valley passed views of the valley was hard but well worth it. By the next morning, the car was looking neglected and ready for a change of scene, so, after 10 days in Luxembourg, we moved on. So far the country has proved to be the cleanest, most relaxing and friendly country of our trip (By the end of our 10 day stay in the country I had seen 3 items of litter and was able to dispose of one of these myself!). Everyone says Hello either in French, German or Dutch as a matter of course. The roads, and not just the main ones. but almost every road we drove on was perfect. We left the campsite at as near to 10:00hrs as we could, and took the most direct route, along the A7, entering the city from the north, past the newly commissioned electric bus terminus near Luxembourg Airport and down the Rue de Trèves, parking near an historic wayside shrine, close to Fort Rumigny. We paid our €3 for 3 hours and climbed the steps to view the aforementioned fort. The building, interestingly bricked up had interesting architecture.After walking around the building and into what appeared to be a building site, we started to walk down the marked footpath to the river. After about we came across a barrier and the end of this footpath. We returned to the road and headed down towards the River Alzette, which we crossed then followed the riverside walk and up a narrow path next to the National History Museum with a bust of two children and a Cavalier or soldier. Unaware of what we had just passed, we continued along the road to the start of the Vallée de la Pétrusse. We followed the old river bed under the city passed the Chapell Saint-Quirin, under the Pont Viaduc, passing an amazing skate park. We climbed to a view point overlooking the park and a modern bridge carrying the N2.We climbed a path under the bridge and up to the Parc Edmond J. Klein and the municipal park which contained the art museum of Vauban's collection of artwork in the Villa Vauban. All through the parks were entrances to the underground forts which surround the old capital (Fort Lambert, Fort Louvigny, Fort Royal and Fort Berlaimont to name just a few).Time was now getting short and, after stopping to photograph the monument for the Battle of the Bulge and the amazing building of the foundation Pescatore.Then with 45 minutes to get back to the car and with the phone saying that it'd take us 50 minutes, we headed to the FREE Pfaffenthal Panorama Elevator, with amazing views down over the river and under town. We crossed the river and followed the river bank to the Pont Vauban and after ignoring the phone, made it back to the car with 15 minutes to spare. Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 7 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining A Walk Around Wiltz - 16/09/2017 View Photo Gallery for 16/09/2017 We bundled ourselves in to the car as quickly as we could at 11:00hrs as the temperature had just reached the dizzy height of 11°C which wasn't helped by the wintry sun working its way through the thin veil of mist. Where to go, what to do? Archaeology is the subject we normally fall back on when faced with this dilemma. Luxembourg was the scene of The Battle of the Bulge which lasted from the 16 December 1944 until the 25 January 1945 and was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II. It was launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in eastern Belgium, northeast France, and Luxembourg, towards the end of World War II. The surprise attack caught the Allied forces completely off guard. American forces bore the brunt of the attack and incurred their highest casualties of any operation during the war. The battle also severely depleted Germany's armoured forces, and they were largely unable to replace them. German personnel and, later the Luftwaffe aircraft sustained heavy losses. After an aborted attempt at a walk to see some bunkers, due to lack of parking facilities on the part where the walk crossed a road, we instead drove down narrow winding, well maintained, forested roads, to Wiltz, a small town in Northern Luxembourg. This town was almost completely destroyed over the four years that the Germans occupied the area and the battle that raged there to liberate it. I climbed the National Monument to the Strike, erected in 1965, that commemorates the National Strike of Luxembourg in 1942. The strikers were executed, by the occupying forces, between the 3rd and 9th September 1942. Luxembourg's most-famous 20th-century sculptor Lucien Wercollier, who was imprisoned at the Hinzert concentration camp, created the reliefs on the lighthouse shaped monument.We walked up through the town admiring the look and feel of the place, passing a memorial to General D Eisenhower who stayed in Wiltz in 1944 as the plaque so succinctly informed us.Opposite this was a memorial to an American serviceman who bought Christmas back to Wiltz for the children with the help of his army colleagues. We returned to the car, well after the end of our 30cent allotted time of 30 minutes with relief at not getting a parking ticket and the hassle that would cause, we punched 'Home' in to the SatNav and followed instructions for about 15 minutes before I realised that the satNav was taking us to our last campsite in Belgium... Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 3 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining Beter-uit vakantipark Walsdorf - 15/09/2017 View the Photo Gallery So with half of September already under our belts, we have moved countries and are now safely snuggled in our caravan in a valley on the east side of Luxembourg, just from the capital and in the middle of the beautifully wooded and hilly walking area of Northern Luxembourg.The campsite, Beter-uit vakantipark Walsdorf (Better off holiday), Walsdorf is a small village just up the road. Yesterday the weather here had been atrocious, with so much rain there were people bogged down in their campervans and a burst drain or a new spring appearing just above the netball-come-boules pitch causing the pitches lower down that site to become waterlogged. We pulled in to the campsite and stopped across the entrance to the carpark to visit the reception and register ourselves. The entrance to the campsite itself, is under a building with a 2.7 meter clearance, so we were relieved when, with our approximately 2.65 meter height (note to self, get the tape measure out!), we were offered a pitch on a hard standing out of the muddy area. Our first impressions of Luxembourg as a country is that it is clean and tidy, we didn't see any litter or other detritus on our drive from Belgium to the campsite, or on our walk from the campsite later in the day. Footpaths and walks, of which there are hundreds are zealously marked and maintained. Once we crossed the border in to Luxembourg the roads seemed calmer and well kept with more new tarmac than I have seen for a while; the towns, colourful and interesting; whilst the scenery outstanding, with the first signs of autumn just colouring the lush greens of the hillsides, was spectacular. After we had levelled the van with the pitchperfect,we settled in for the mandatory cup of tea and ended up talking to our Dutch neighbours for half an hour, Great people to talk to. We then added the last bit of flour to the sourdough loaf and left it to rise whilst we took a stroll around the campsite, negotiating the flooded road. The site is surprisingly big, considering the area. It winds it's way down the valley ending up, at the bottom with a large football come games field. It has a star rating in the A.C.S.I. guide of 8.4, which is amazing considering the price of only €13 per night, wifi is extra, and cost us €15 for the week, a little bit expensive but at least, if it rains I'll be happy updating the website On returning to the caravan, the sourdough had done it's work and had doubled in size, so we popped it in the oven for 35 minutes, when it was cooked. it looked wonderful, so we covered it up with a tea towel and to prevent temptation, we went for a walk up the road a bit, to see where it went. The remains of my cold stopped us after as I, once again, felt like the contents of an unwashed sock. The walk had been necessary and had whetted our appetites, so we broke in to tomorrows breakfast and had a slice (or two) of fresh bread... scrumptious Tonight's supper: Pasta with Aubergine pesto, smoked salmon topped with Parmesan cheese... yummy! today's walk: No comments Add a comment You will be adding a comment to this post as a guest.
