View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries Walks walks and Archaeology - 27th until 30th September 2017 View the Photo Gallery A Walk from the Campsite 27/09/2017 The opposite way to the last time we did this walk, it was still with a climb of . A Round Walk to Stromberg and Back 28/09/2017 A longer walk today, to visit the local town of Stromberg. Again, in the forest we climbed up a steep path to the top of the local hills and followed it until it met the dual carriageway, which we followed on a track, which ran along side it, for 10 minutes, before turning away and in to the town, just as the school children were being decanted from buses and school buildings. We fought our way through the crowds, dodging their meandering courses, until we arrived on the far side, when we started our downhill walk to some ruins. The ruins were from Roman times and had been rebuilt to make them safe. There was still enough to recognise the remains of a church. The old buildings in Stromberg were overshadowed by modern buildings, however some history still showed through. The walk back through the woods on the other side of the river took us up a steep valley to a viewpoint looking down the valley Today's walk ended up With two sets of hills to climb, the total climb came to . All in all, a good walk with a little rain as we returned to the campsite. A Very Short Walk 29/09/2017 After a trip to Aldi and Lidl, followed by a "Grand Caravan Clean" we decided on a short walk today which was thwarted by blocked or deep mud covered paths in all directions so we returned to the caravan for a cup of tea. Today's walk ended up A Two Walk Day 30/09/2017 Let's go and find some archaeology. We drove up in to the hills following the trusty SatNav up narrow roads, deeper and deeper in to the forest. Walk 1: We parked our car on a gravel carpark and set off down a path in search of a Roman Watchtower. The tower was rather unimpressive as the Archaeologists had vandalised the site, rebuilding the remains to a certain height with no indication as to where the original ended and the rebuild started. Walk 1 took us along forest tracks for . Walk 2: After a short drive, we parked with other cars and headed down through woodland to a forest track to the site of a Roman Villa. Obviously used for education purposes, once again the site has been partially excavated then rebuilt or abandoned and, apart from a huge modern wooden structure over the main excavated site, the rest was a jumble of piles of stone, partially excavated and abandoned trenches, and hole riddled tarpaulins which appeared to be covering excavated walls. A real shame that no one seems responsible for its upkeep, apart that is for the reconstructed garden which had watering cans at hand for watering the healthy looking, labelled plants. Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 10 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining A day for getting keys sorted out - 26/09/2017 View Photo Gallery for 26/09/2017 As mentioned in a blog from Luxembourg the other day, the keys Julia was carrying got lost, so today it's a trip to a Mercedes Garage in the nearby town of Budesheim. The drive there wasn't difficult and we were soon parked up in the carpark behind. Julia opted to stay in the car, so I entered the showroom and happily, they spoke English, as my German is pitiful. 0-100, thank you, I love you and Onion make up 90 percent of my German vocabulary! Firstly I managed to sort out the environmental sticker for the car at a cost of just €5, then I Asked them about the replacement key... at first the receptionist looked startled then said "That's about €250" My reply was "I know, but better two keys rather than one!" She found no argument with this logical argument and guided me to another desk and explained the situation to the man there who appeared not to speak any English. Finally I managed to get him to understand that we didn't need the whole key, as we had separated the metal part of the key from the remote part of the key. With a smile the man said, in broken English "Not so expensive then." It turns out that just the metal part of the key is €65 while the electronic bit would have cost us €265. I paid the money and agreed to return the following week, on Wednesday, 8 days later 5 working days, but as you would expect there is a public holiday for Unification Day on the Tuesday.We then headed off towards Frankfurt to a town called Mainz where we found a Sound Bar for listening to music in the caravan and a HUGE shopping center. When we finally made it back to the campsite, we completed our daily walk, only , but through vineyards dripping with fruit. Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 8 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining And in to Germany - 25/09/2017 View Photo Gallery for 25/09/2017 The car, as I said at the end of the last blog, was looking dejected to show that I wasn't exaggerating, click on the picture below!!!However, by the time we had arrived at our next campsite, across the boarder in Germany, she was looking the part and cared for once again.The campsite, Campingplatz Aumühle, is situated in a valley, next to the river Guldenbach and the hillsides are forested. The campsite is used mostly for one night stops, so when we stopped at reception and the owner asked how long we would be staying, he preempted us by suggesting one night. We corrected him and were told to find a suitable place. As the site was mostly empty, we positioned ourselves in the middle of a large gap between two motorhomes. The site didn't stay quiet for long as a steady stream of Dutch and German caravans and motorhomes slowly engulfed us. As the afternoon wore on, we set off on our daily walk. A bridge, from the campsite took us over the river, up a bank on to a railway line... probably not used much... may be out of use... ahhh! rusty lines, we're safe! We crossed the tracks, careful to watch both ways, just in case, then started to explore the forest tracks. We worked our way up to the top of the hill, startling a couple of deer, who fled as we passed. We finally came out on a track running alongside a field. The views overlooking the valley stretched forever in to the distance and the hint of autumnal colours promised some pretty photographs later in our stay here. The path took us across to the village of Eckenroth, then down through the grape vines, laden with fruit, to Schweppenhauser, the local village to the campsite. We then walked along side the railway line through a field set aside for community stuff, with seating and insect hotel. This led us back over the railway line and back to the caravan.
