View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries Walking in the Black Forest - 5th to the 10th October View the Photo Gallery New Campsite, Camping Bad Liebenzell An easy site to find on the only road through Bad Liebenzell. Be aware that in low season, if you arrive after 10:00hrs, the reception is closed and a phone call is required, to a man with little English... we got in, in the end. €2.45 EACH tourist tax which included free train travel on the local trains (we had no kneed to use them as we walked everywhere!) which made a cheap €17 pitch in to a rather expensive pitch at €19.45 per night. The pitch we chose was huge, with views of Bad Liebenzell Castle and the autumnal painted hillsides around it. New site, so a short walk of just was enough to settle in. Badhause 1897 and Bad Liebenzell Badhause 1897 seemed like something to aim for, so we followed the footpath, from the campsite, through a wonderful park full of art and artiness. Sculptures, cubes, decorated posts and water. When we finally reached Badhause 1897 and found that it was a café, we had no money with us, we decided that we'd walk back to the town and take a look around. We walked back through the gardens until we reached the town, where we headed up towards the building with the photogenic towers (In my opinion, the only photogenic part of the town), then back to the campsite.A Great Long Walk With the memory of yesterday's walk to nowhere, we decided to head of in to the Black Forest. To start with, we were disappointed. The footpath, following the river and the railway line, downstream, was metalled, level and without blemish, however, when we struck off up a valley, following a marked footpath, past historic way marks and historic remembrance scripts, etched in to the local stone. After we left the river, we passed over a bridge which lead us on to a managed, a terraced area, with seating a fire pit and sinks and a covered area which was signed as a campsite. I harked back to my younger years and camping on Dartmoor, this could be a place to bring good friends in the future with a few beers and an open mind ;) The walk back to the campsite was easy, a steady downhill walk, around the wooded escarpment to the road. A brilliant walk. Backwards and a bit extra Again, we left the campsite, this time with a vague plan to follow the route we took yesterday, in reverse. We took a different path up to the highest point then followed the path back down the riverbed we followed yesterday. Instead of the boring level tarmacked footpath, back to the campsite, I thought that it might be a good plan to walk the other side of the valley. Another climb but not too difficult, except for the deviation up a track that looked like it wold take us to our path by a quicker route, it didn't so after retracing our tracks, we continued on the proper path to Bad Liebenzell Castle and a fascinating walk under the restaurant in an old covered path, then down, steep paths, in to town and back to the caravan for a well earned cup of tea. A total of with a climb of a fantastic Temperature and a short walk I was sat, quite innocently when Julia happened to mention that I didn't look too well. She felt my head and commented that my head felt very hoy. I felt drained, but assumed that was because of two days of walking. A Day Off - 3rd October 2017 Stayed close to the toilet today with sever stomach cramps... feeling a bit sorry for myself. A Walk From the Museum - 4th October 2017 Today, to make up for yesterdays lack of walk and to ward off the approaching Cabin Fever, we drove the car to pick up the new car key from the Mercedes Garage in the Büdesheim area of Münster-Sarmsheim, which was ready and waiting for us. We then drove southward to a town called Bad Kreuznach, to a carpark I had found near a Roman Villa which we thought we could visit. The Roman Villa, it turned out, was inside a building, so we paid our €4 each to get in and were pleasantly surprised to find a beautifully laid out, preserved and displayed room full of archaeology. There were two almost complete mosaic floors, one of which had an access stair way so that you could see underneath the floor to the Hypocaust. The building was aimed at education and children but was one of the better archaeological sites we have visited over the past 3 years. After chatting to the lady behind the entrance desk, who was also interested in archaeology, for 15 minutes, we asked if the two hour limit on the carpark was cast in stone. It turned out that it wasn't so we headed up in to the parkland and to paths overlooking the town. The walk () took us up with some spectacular views over a relatively unspectacular city, but with view of hills and plains in the distance. The paths were well signed and signs of wildlife were everywhere. We saw a mouse, which obviously took our presence there with a pinch of salt and totally ignored us and a German couple who stopped to photograph it as it munched its way through its lunch. The walk took us underneath one of the towers which are dotted around this part of Germany and are either for Air Traffic Control or radio masts! I had found an archaeological sit called Felseneremitage, a hermitage with a short walk to the railway museum at Feldbahnmuseum Guldental. Let's go to the forest we walked in yesterday.We drove to the forest where we had visited the Roman remains, pulled in to a lay by and, after consulting the maps on the phone, set off on a walk that took us deep in to the forest. With signs of wild boar all around us, we even saw a rare black squirrel. Mankind had made his mark on the landscape in the form of huge wind turbines and accompanying roads.
