View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries A Day in San Moritz - 24/10/2017 View Photo Gallery for 24/10/2017 We arose to thick valley mist. Although the temperature was only 5.7° Celsius, the sky above was a deep welcoming blue and, by 10:30hrs the heat of the autumn sun had lifted the monotone veil of mist to reveal, in all their splendour, the snow covered mountains around us. Today's plan is to drive a little way in to Switzerland and go for a walk. The signposts all shouted 'San Moritz' at us as we drove towards the border. We stopped in a lay-by and I stirred the SatNav with my little finger... "Let's go to San Moritz" I suggested, Julia agreed and so onwards we continued, following the river Inn up the valley, towards the famous Ski Resort, about from the campsite. As we drove up the mostly excellent road, we passed through gorges and under the vastness of the Alps. Reaching above sea level. The lake is fed by the river Séla to the South West and exits the lake as the river Inn, the same but much larger river which passes our current campsite.When we arrived at the outskirts of San Moritz, we took a run though it's streets looking for a parking place. A lot of the car parks had height limits on them of and, whilst we have fitted under barriers of that size, we are officially , so we followed the road out of town down to the lake side and San Anton Bad, where we parked up, by the Catholic church of Saint Karl built in the late 19th Century in the style of many of the old Roman villas. built with a tall tower similar to the other village churches. Today's walk took us around St Moritz Lake' a walk where we saw red and black squirrels aplenty and some magnificent views over the lake. As we drove home, just after arriving back in Austria, we noticed a sign which said in very bold letters DUTY FREE. We turned left and wound our way, back in to Switzerland, up a hairpin strewn road that took us to a small ski resort called Samnaun, high up () in the Swiss Alps. Today we would be going for a short walk into Italy, the border being some away, we decided against walking all the way and drove the car up to the Reschenpass on the border of Austria and Italy. As we arrived, the snow started, not much of it, but enough to say that it was snowing. The temperature was, according to the car thermometer, 2°C and accompanied by a brisk northerly wind. After donning coats, scarves and gloves, we crossed the border with the wind behind us and quickly diverted in to a local bar and pizza parlour 'Pizzeria Irene', to utilise their facilities, top up with beer and a coffee, before following the road up hill to the first turning off. We took this route for took photos and returned to the car. A short walk of just with a beer and a coffee thrown in for good measure. We crossed the river and walked up hill, passed the hospital an impressive buildingand on to the Burg Siegmundsried built in 1471Then back to the campsite passing an old barnand the Catholic Church of St Leonard No comments Add a comment You will be adding a comment to this post as a guest. Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 1 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining Hill Walking - 20/10/2017 View Photo Gallery for 20/10/2017 Whilst walking is a challenge we have set ourselves for this year (A walk a day for 365 days) today's walk was, while not the longest of walks covering just we also had to climb some up from the campsite to to the village of Ladis with its picturesque castle, the Burg Laudegg, perched up on the top of a cliff overlooking the valley with Choughs, Jackdaws, Eagles and Ravens circling overhead. The climb up to the village, known for it's sulphur and sour springs, which stands at above sea level, offers the walker and climber, spectacular views over the Inn valley. Our walk back to the campsite, sightly less precarious, took us through the varied pine and deciduous forested mountain side, along tracks and narrow winding paths. We passed strange dwarf ponies, waterfalls and glimpses of the pointed snow capped mountain of Nauderer Hennesiglspitze on the Austrian-Italian border. Not through lack of WiFi or material but through a touch of depression. This is now sort of under control but I have to ask you a question: Do you enjoy these blogs or could they be improved? We arrived in Austria today after quite a long stay near Salem in Southern Germany. Yesterday we purchased the necessary tags and vignettes for Austria (€8.50 for 10 days) and Switzerland (€35 for the remainder of 2017). We'll be visiting Switzerland and Liechtenstein before we head of, back in to northern Italy. The campsite looks like it will be an amazing place to stay (especially as it's only €15 per night. The views are stunning, the river is close and fast moving, the mountains have snow on top and the skies are currently clear. Some great walks are anticipated.
