View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries A Walk to Vrsar - 12/11/2017 View Photo Gallery for 12/11/2017 The last fine day before storms and coldness descends on northern Croatia, so we'll take you on a stroll to Vrsar in the sunshine, before it deserts us.The walk starts from the campsite and follows the rocky and man flattened and paved coastline under umbrella pined around the headline the to the town of Vrsar. a working fishing port at the north end of the Adriatic Sea. A small port with a number of working trawlers and fishing boats as well as the lucrative trade of tourism.Not sure that the walk was, as yet, finished, we decided to climb to a view point to the west of the town. we walked on the harbour side and watched a Cormorant chasing tiny sprat along the harbour edge. The reflections in the still waters of the Adriatic Sea were sublime. We climbed up to the vantage point on a hill close to the town, to a quarry with a high vantage point overlooking a gaggle of tiny islands, rimmed with the local white limestone tufa and topped with the dark green umbrella pines. Sculptures, made from the local rock also adorned the area, as with the sea front of Vrsar. with sculptures and effigies, depicting sea creatures, ergonomic shapes and Christian symbols. The views and the height attained, instilled a sense of superiority and power, as we looked down over the deep harmonic blues of the Adriatic Sea and the soft, almost treacle like, drift of the water in the harbour. The reflections melting into the colourful images of the reality of the working environment, the beauty that is Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The local supermarket, the Konzum Maxi provided the necessary hole in the wall to dispense the required cash. So as not to waste the morning we drove the to a car park outside a block of flats about about from the Amphitheatre, which, when we got there had a coach load of Vietnamese tourists queueing to get in. After visiting the toilets in the car park next door to the Amphitheatre at a cost of 5 kuna which proved awkward as we only had a 200 kuna note. After much searching of pockets, the lady produced the correct change and we returned to the Amphitheatre, whose entrance was now queue less. The Amphitheatre is the 6th largest and one of the best preserved Amphitheatres in the world, although I have to say that the Amphitheatre in Arles, France, was far more exciting and interesting to visit.The Vietnamese Tourists we met in there, were a friendly bunch and we talked to a couple of youngsters who were really enjoying their visit and seemed genuinely interested in everything and anything on offer. After exploring the Amphitheatre's every nook and cranny, we left to explore a bit more of the city. The brown signs pointing to so many historical and tourist spaces pointed in every direction. Unfortunately the Theatre was in the throws of being renovated but its double gates are impressive.History can be found everywhere... ... even in the retaining walls of a car park! We then moved on down to a Roman Church from the 2nd to 4th Century and in to main city square where along with a few other people, we found the Temple of Augustus and the City Hall. A sign informed us that, that during the 2nd World War the Anglo American air force bombed Pula and destroyed 102 historic buildings, most of which were demolished and set aside as a green space (not, as it indicated on the sign, to be a good thing). Augustus's Temple, though, was rebuilt and is a beautiful piece of history to admire. We next sought out the Roman Mosaic, hidden down a back street opposite a dentists. There has to be so much more buried underneath Pula as this one was a good below street level.We then moved on past the beautiful old church of St. Maria Formosa, which stood there looking dejected with very little information about the building which was lockedWe then walked on around the more commercial side of Pula and the shopping streets which still had reminders that shopping isn't everything. The Arch of the Sergii - approximate date of construction: 29-27 BC - was one such reminderWe then walked through the indoor fish and meat market to the outside fresh produce section. The colours were just amazing and we had to buy another string of chilies to adorn the caravan culinary wall, along with memento's from all around Europe.We then walked back to the car via St Anton's Church and an 'Old' Castle/fort on top of a hill. sadly neglected, but still an interesting place to visit.On our way back home we happened to see, what I called a Truli. We followed a sign which depicted one of there stone buildings and found a wonderful City of Kažuns, Stone buildings from recent history (1850's)Historied out, we returned home No comments Add a comment You will be adding a comment to this post as a guest. The noise was horrendous as the rear plastic quarter valence was ripped off. The tree escaped injury and with a washer or two and some industrial Velcro (I know now why I bought it 4 years ago!), everything was ship shape and we were off on a non toll trip to Croatia. The Slovenian, Croatian border was a double passport check with the two sides seated in separate huts, just 12 feet away from each other under the same roof. The roads in Croatia are not as well kept as those in Slovenia, but offered some great views as we entered our 18th Country of our trip.The campsite, Porto Sole, just outside the port of Vrasr, and from Pula, both places we intend to visit before heading off towards Zagreb on the 14th.
