View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries A drive through San Marino - 11/05/2017 View Photo Gallery for 11/05/2017 A cloudy day, with a little rain overnight, awaited us when we woke this morning, after a very muggy night tossing and turning, even though the rooflight and most of the windows were open. By lunch time we were ready for a trip out, so, with nothing better to do, I stuck my finger in the SatNav and gave it a stir and we set of for a point the other side of San Marino city and the Monte Titano. As we passed under the rock, roadworks stopped us, just long enough to photograph the top from underneath, that is a long way up!Further round the mountain, we twisted and turned our way down hill and, at the bottom, where, as we crossed the river and started up the other side, unbeknown to us, we passed in to Italy, up to a town, or rather, a lose conglomerate of dwellings, called Castello. We then heading up hill towards Ca Micci, we looked over to San Marino and just had to stop to take photographs.We then decided that enough was enough and set off to find the Titan Coop away on the other side of the country. We started down hill, turned Right at a main road and re-entered San Marino! The Titan COOP, when we got there, was tiny, so with a couple of bottles of milk, 2 chops and a bottle of wine, we returned to the campsite to get ready for our departure tomorrow, back in to Italy and on to Venice. After the usual jobs around the house, Julia and I set off to walk to the Funicular Railway which takes you up to the Old Town of San Marino. The walk, up backstreets, footpaths and crossing main roads wasn't far at only but it also rose steadily by . It took us 40 minutes to get there, arriving just before the regular quarter hourly shuttle service up the final . Julia, not being one for heights, was clinging on to the support pole as the sirens went off and we started our assent, but before the 2 minute trip was done, she was watching the scenery going by like a regular traveller. San Marino was founded 1,716 years ago by a Roman Stonemason, who in 301 founded the independent religious community of Monte Titano, the mountain which dominates the country today. The third smallest country, behind Monaco and the Vatican City, it is totally landlocked, which caused a few problems during the war, when San Marino stayed neutral, this ended up with the Italians cutting the telephone lines (Who says war kills people?). We exited the cable car and went straight to the Tourist Information office where we presented our passports and paid our €10 (€5 each) to have our passports stamped with a San Marino Tourist Visa, which we did for no other reason than, we could - Getting in practise for when BREXIT takes hold Here we were informed that the 'Second Tower' was closed due to being struck by lightening the previous day. We then crossed a small park and grabbed an empty seat and ordered coffees. Refreshed we started to explore this 'island in the sky' wandering up back alleys, up flights of steps until we rejoined the main throng of people heading upwards, discarding those not fit enough to continue the journey in the nearest café, for collection on the way back. We decided to look at, rather than go into the towers, as we enjoy the walking an views more than following flocks of people in a procession around a museum or, in this case tower. I know, I know, we missed some beautiful and interesting things, but then we have had to miss so much that is beautiful and interesting, as we have limited our trip around Europe to just a few years! We continued upwards and found a shop selling postcards, stamps and a pen! So, after finding somewhere in the shade to sit down, We wrote four quick postcards back to the family and, later we posted them as well (I can almost hear the cheers ). We then walked towards the First Tower, a military fortress, built in the 12th Century. We avoided the toll booths and followed the signs to the Second tower. On the way we stopped off at a view point, with spectacular views over the valley below. The Second Tower, the one that was closed due to a lightening strike yesterday, whilst we sheltered in the caravan, supported scaffolding around the top of the tower, would be open tomorrow, so after a wander around the different viewpoints, we navigated the coachload of visitors, and skirted around the outside of the closed tower and headed towards the Third Tower. The Third tower, and in my mind the most interesting, was stuck out on the edge of a vertical drop, was built in the 13th Century. When we got there, and only the hardened few made it this far, we found a hexagonal tower, with the only entrance, inaccessible, as its opening was a number of meters above ground level. The scaffolding was probably there to allow access for workmen who were in evidence repairing and maintaining around the town. On the walk back to the town, we stopped for an ice-cream. We then had a mad five minutes as we retraced our steps looking for Julia's jumper which had been tied around her waist, luckily after a couple of hundred metres, I remembered that she had put it in the rucksack! Back in town, we posted the postcards and followed the narrow roads back towards the funicular lift, and in to the piazza closed in on the opposite side to our entry point, by the Basilica di San Marino, fronted with 8 huge Romanesque columns and an open door. What do you do to an open door? We go through it. The inside of the church was very white, with a sympathetically modern tiled floor.The trip down the funicular descent was uneventful, Julia with eyes shut most of the way down gave us reason to converse with a lady, with eyes open, with the same fears. We walked back to the campsite with a slight detour to the 'Simply' supermarket for a beautiful bottle of red wine. A fantastic day out. The clouds cleared just in time to allow the sun to filter through the open window and burn it's way through my eyelids, after a quick position readjustment, as it was only 6:02hrs, I slept solidly until 7:30hrs when my bladder woke me demanding urgent attention! ‘between the majestic foothills of the central Italian mountains and the opal coloured Mediterranean Adriatic Sea We got up and started the now natural routine of packing up, paying and, reading the news. By 10:00hrs we had waved our good byes and were driving out through the gates and on our way, following the smaller roads, so as to miss the toll roads. The SatNav told us that it was going to take 3 hours 50 minutes, I told it to shut up and we were off. We followed the road northwards towards Ancona in brilliant sunshine and temperatures hovering around 19°C (according to the car thermometer). We then continued following the coast, where the railway line had rejoined the narrow strip of flat land between the majestic foothills of the central Italian mountains and the opal coloured Mediterranean Adriatic Sea. As the railway and a colony of campsites battled for supremacy, with peace and tranquillity over big business and trade, we footled on by, determined, on our course for our final destination, the Republic of San Marino. The border, like all borders in Europe was nonexistent. A sign telling us the speed limits, was the only indication that we had crossed in to another country. We followed the signs for the campsite, seemingly the only campsite in the country as the signs stated, quite categorically "The Campsite", arriving just behind a motorhome from Austria. The Dutch lady who booked us in, spoke good English and was helpful, with discount tickets, bus times and maps of the area, presented, without prompting. "So will you be staying one night?" I looked at here with a smile and said no, more than that. "OK I'll book you in for two nights and we can go from there." I know this is a small country, but there must be some things to see and do! We jumped in the car and drove into the site. There were a surprising number of people installed on a lot of the pitches, but we found one that would fit our caravan and car without having to climb through windows, and set ourselves up for the afternoon.This is the first campsite since the heel of Italy's boot, where we have not been within earshot of the sea, 5 campsites ago!
