View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries Sunday Explorations - 12/03/2017 View Photo Gallery for 12/03/2017 With a leisurely start to the day, we left the campsite at around about 11:00hrs to head southwards, along the coast, heading for a archaeological site on the Cap Colonna, away. Like many of the Archaeological sites through Italy, it was run down and overgrown with weeds, which was a great shame. Still, there was still plenty to see and do though. We walked through the site, trying to work out what they meant, and failing fairly spectacularly! The Black Redstarts were playful in the warming breeze and the lizards barely touching the ground, as they skittered across the paths in front of us, escaping one sun drenched rock for another. The wind was did it's worst and we had to go hunting for the waist water bucket which had delivered itself to a pitch four down from ours. We were glad that we had turned Peggy (the caravan) nose to the wind, even still, she bucked like a wild horse all night long! The day dawned with clear blue skies and a howling gale. The sea, as the wind was off shore, was a beautiful turquoise colour with some large waves out to sea, but no big waves reaching the shore. We took the opportunity to clean the remains of Etna's mini eruption off the front of the caravan and wash the carpets which somehow last night when I had been rushing around getting things ready for the storm, I had trodden in a great blob of tar! We turned Peggy through 45° so she was nose to the wind, which is coming in from the north. The weather deteriorated just as I got the legs wound up and suddenly it was blowing a hooligan, Derek, who we have met before on our travels, arrived and wanted to talk, and, as you would expect, the rain started stotting down! So finally, camera phone in one hand, taking pictures of the amazing cloud formations, and the Caravan remote control in the other spinning Peggy (the caravan) around, We finally sorted the situation out, only to find that there was no wine for tonight. We set of in the car at around 11am after completing the mornings chores and headed out towards Crotone an ancient town with castle and loads of history to explore. The SatNav decided to test me out and tried to get us on to the main road, by travelling along a very rough track which ended in a field! A turn in the road was called for and we were soon back on, what passes for, metalled roads, in Italy. 40 minutes later we were parking under the magnificent castle walls, next to the marina. A walk through a park took us up into the old town, passing under the entrance bridge, with Italian ladies calling out of windows, telling us to go around in to the old town. The gates to the castle, when we arrived there, were closed and wouldn't be opening until the next day, so, undeterred, we headed off down the narrow winding streets, where a healthy mixture of ancient and modern coexisted in close proximity. As we came to the completion of a walk around the streets of the old town, we stumbled upon, totally by accident the Archaeological museum, so we paid our €2 each and spent a good hour being astounded by the beauty of stone axes from 17,000 years ago, the intricately painted pottery from the Greek era of 3,000 years ago, along with piles of gold leaves designed for ear rings. So much to see.After we left the museum, we returned to the car and decided to drive on to see if another archaeological site was open, as we thought that we'd visit that tomorrow, it was, so we turned tail and headed back to the caravan. Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 3 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining A Temple and a Walk - 07/03/2017 View Photo Gallery for 07/03/2017 After a very windy night which had me outside at 02:00hrs rescuing chairs, and then a cracker of a thunderstorm which passed close by, we decided to go for a walk to a local archaeological site and then to the beach. The walk took us out of the campsite and along a road, past half finished buildings, the rough road we came down yesterday and passed the local fly tipping area and collapsing swimming pool, a majestic, modern looking building with a large proportion of the roof tiles damaged and missing.The entrance to the Temple of Apollo, when we got there looked uninviting, with rusty signs and a chain across the path. Ignoring these deterrents, we wandered up the track to the next fenced off section, which contained the archaeology. The gates were broken down and the rusty barbed wire fence was in loops hidden in the undergrowth. Cattle had been trampling through the ruins which were very neglected and offered little to stimulate the imagination. We left the site disappointed and walked to the headland and lighthouse of Punta Alice, then back along the shore line, through a community park, to the campsite. a walk of around . With the weather set to deteriorate over the next 24 hours, with winds expected to reach in excess of , tomorrow will be a day of sheltering and shopping. Please note that all comments are checked manually and if this service is abused, it will be removed. enter 10 into this box to prove you are human: 300 characters remaining An Evening of Clouds and Pizza - 06/03/2017 View Photo Gallery for 06/03/2017 After popping out to the shops for a bottle of wine, and a spot of "whale" watching (I mean sun bathing!), I got ready to make pizza, one of our favourite home made meals. Before I do the pizza though, I took a few photos of the magnificent cloud display. OK so, back on course. First I mixed the dough and put it on the heated towel rail in the bathroom to rise. While waiting for the magic to happen, I chopped onions and garlic and after softening them, added a tin of chopped tomatoes. While they were cooking, I sorted out the anchovies, capers peppers and tuna for Julia's and the sun dried tomatoes, salami and chili's for mine.By now, the dough had risen so it was rolled out, and the ingredients added along with fresh mozzarella, then placed in the overn. 20 minutes later.... The SatNav was insisting we turn right, with no possible room for manoeuvring past parked cars and huge holes on the road. We continued forward on a metalled road until we reached the bone yard with its grotesque two storied modern buildings, which housed their dead. Here we had to turn right on to a duel carriageway, neither directions of which were metalled. We bumped our way along the track to the end then turned right again, in front of a sign which told us we were near the archaeological site of the Temple of Apollo Aleo, after a couple of hundred meters we turned left in to the campsite.
