View by Date or Latest First Next Previous All Entries A Walk by the Sea - 05/12/2017 View Photo Gallery for 05/12/2017 For our final day here we awoke to new caravan next to us... hang on a moment, they were at Split!The Yun family soon left on their trip to Dubrovnik, whilst we decided on a walk around the bay. The weather was clear, with wall to wall sunshine. We walked down to the bay, turned right and circumnavigated the work being carried out on the all-new esplanade which was being readied for the summer season. On the way we stopped in a lay by to take some amazing photographs overlooking the old town from high up on the hillside.We then followed the SatNav to a carpark which was of course was full, so followed our noses to another carpark not far away. As we didn't expect to stay more than four hours, we bit the bullet and stayed in this, the expensive carpark. We walked down in to the old town, across a drawbridge and through an arch called the Pile Gate, under the mighty city walls and in to a square which was home to a huge drinking water distribution building. We continued down Stadun the main street, heading for the docks at the far end of the town. Half way there we cut off to visit some of the back streets, where life continues as it must have done for centuries. We then entered the harbour area, where the glass bottomed boats ferried people around the beautiful crystal clear seas.Deciding against a boat ride, we next visited the Cathedral.Signs took us from the cathedral to the City Walls, a paid attraction which turned out to be the perfect way to see the city. Costing 45 Kuna each (£5.24 or €5.96) we were sent on our way around the one way route around the city walls. Birds-eye views of everyday life King's Landing and even an ice-cream, much to the locals amusement ...before dropping back down to street level and working our way back to the car. On our way back to the campsite we drove up to the top of the surrounding hills where the Serbian Army had laid siege to Dubrovnik in their Homeland War of 1991-93. Cleaning and tidying with a short walk looked like the agenda for the day as the rain was still falling in, what can only be described as, buckets full. By midday, the sun was peaking through the scudding clouds as they cascaded down from the high planes, to the coast. Time for a walk. We donned warm clothing and set off down to see the sea and to see how far we could walk along the coast. The sea, as it happened, we found about 600 metres away, just passed the huge, unsightly, white chaired and smoked glassed monstrosity that is the Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera Hotel. Once on the sea front we found ourselves amongst the bulldozers and a major improvement scheme currently in progress. We walked about 200 metres along the beach, until the promenade gave way to rubble and pipes. We turned and decided that the other way looked like an easier challenge. We strolled along the quay side, chatting and watching the sea birds and a king fisher, until we reached the end of the quay. The walk still hadn't been long enough, so we set off up a side path around the headland and in to the next bay, Kupari Bay. A desolate scene confronted us. Built for the elite of the then Yugoslav army in the 1960s as a resort with a sandy bay, including five hotels, a camp site and many villas. These were built around the Grand Hotel which was built by a Czech investor between the two world wars.When the Homeland War broke out, in 1991, the Yugoslav army bombarded and burned the resort and phosphorous bombs were used to systematically burn the hotels, floor by floor.The Croatian Army moved in for a while then was handed over for privatisation. Our next stop will be in Bosnia before we go back down to Dubrovnik in the second part of Croatia in a few days time. The thing with Bosnia is that it is not in the EU or the Customs Union, so our EU wide car insurance would not be valid. So what would be the outcome? Well, as we neared the Croat-Bosnian border at the Bijača crossing on a beautifully laid motorway, as we wended our way towards a campsite with amazing reviews, at Medjugorje. The modern crossing point in Croatia, checked passports and waved us through without a hitch. The /hour speed limit through No Man's Land which seemed to take eternity, but at only about it was probably my brain worrying that put everything in to slow motion! Anyway we finally reached The Bosnian border control. Passports checked, Car Registration Documents checked "Green Card" "We have not got one, we have to buy insurance" "Pull over there and park. You can buy Border Insurance over there." We parked where instructed and walked over to a bunch of porta-cabins. Not knowing where to go we walked towards a man who looked like he did. 5 minutes and €20 later, we returned to the car with a suitably official looking piece of paper, valid for 17 days, which we showed to the border control. "OK have a good day" We returned to the car and drove forward to the customs check and, after declaring the opened bottle of wine, we continued down the beautiful, tolled motorway costing us justf 1.50 Bosnian Marks (67pence or 76cents). The SatNav told us to continue straight on, which, it turned out, was take the next exit, as the motorway ended 100 metres later in a field, so that was why it was so cheap! We followed the slip-road to the end and turned left. The road, after approximately 100 metres, turned in to a narrow, uneven main road. We thought that the roads in Portugal and Sicily were bad! The caravan site we had chosen, as it was open all year and had raving reviews, was just away, and after winding our way through the back streets of Medjugorje, we arrived at the campsite and pulled in opposite reception... It is at this point in proceedings that I remembered that you should always have a back up plan. The campsite was deserted, washrooms padlocked, water taps removed and bollards across the entrance to the camping field. Thinking, on the hoof, plan B was put in to action. The next campsite, in Croatia was open and was only 2 hours away. SatNav re-set, we returned to the border controls, passing without problem, and continued the day on a short stretch of toll motorway which took us down off the high planes to the coast at Ploče. The road then followed the river Neretva to Opuzem, then we followed the coast passed Dubrovnik to our campsite, as the evening light, assisted by heavy rain, turned dusk in to night. We drove up the slop in to the campsite and found ourselves a pitch. After being greeted by our flu filled host, we settled in, plugged in, attached water and drainage then opened a bottle of wine with our evening meal and relaxed for a quiet evening in.
