Exploring Europe
Diary: 2017 April - Parco Regional del Conero View Gallery (Added 2nd May 2017) Description: While not exactly where we are, it's somewhere we will be visiting
Info: There are 5 diary entries to choose from.
After sitting inside with Julia feeling under the weather yesterday, today dawned, as it usually does, when the sun came up. The blue sky and the dazzling sunshine forcing it way through the open blinds into my eyes. Groaning, I looked at the clock 07:00hrs Aagh!
By 07:30hrs, I gave up the struggle and put the kettle on for a cup of tea. We had also forgotten to do two major tasks last night. 1 was closing the roof blind. I wondered why it was so light! The other was the washing up! I tidied around and stacked everything for after breakfast. Days are usually less of a bind when we get up.
By 12:30hrs we had managed to do everything, including sitting around playing with the website for a couple of hours. So, ready for an explore, without any planning, we jumped in the car and headed for a local town called Loreto. We usually do a little background checking before we turn up somewhere, but this town looked pretty form a distance so we just turned up...
We followed the big blue P signs painted on the road and inserted €2 into a machine and headed up into the town, passed the aeroplane at the top of the steps and crossed up one more flight of steps through the town wall, into the old town, Wow!
A single narrow street, slightly curved, hiding the other end, headed Eastward. To the west, or behind us, depending on where you are standing, was a building, which housed the Post and Police as well as an hotel. We took the curved road and headed east, passed shops selling all sorts of religious ephemera and junk shops selling Pinocchio dolls! A speaker at one of the stalls informed us that we should buy our products here and take them to the church to be blessed!
We walked on until a church and dome appeared between the houses and shops. Then we left the street into a piazza, the Piazza della Madonna, surrounded by buildings including the Palazzo Apostolico, with it's many arched covered area, and to the East, the church, The Santuario della Santa Casa, a huge domed building. In the centre of the Piazza stands an impressive fountain and, today, several hundred people. As we started to walk around the square, the crowd formed itself into a procession and, as we drew level with them, the priests and procession started to sing led them up the steps and into the Church. Not, it would seem, a good time to go in for a look!We walked down the South side of the church to the war memorial and a gate out through the walls, to a view point looking over the fertile planes [f2m]400[/f2m] below. We then walked around the extensive walls until we entered through an arched gateway, the opposite side of the road from where we entered the walled town. The painted roof of which was, to say the least, amazing.
When we got back to the caravan and looked up Loreto
‘Loreto, it turns out, is one of the most esteemed Marian shrines, a shrine to the Virgin Mary, in the world. It houses, so the believer believe, the very home in which, in Nazareth, the Virgin Mary lived, with Joseph and then conceived and raised the young Jesus. How the house got here is open to speculation, but one method was that, in 1291, it was carried by angels first to Croatia where it suddenly appeared in a field, this was, so the story goes, to avoid the Crusades. Then again, on the 12th December 1294, under threat from the Muslim Invasion, to Recanti, by angel and from there, shortly after, again by angels, to it's current location in Loreto!
We will visit again before we leave, to see the Santuario della Santa Casa.

‘I slowly turned around to find Julia face down on the path!
Today's fun and games is to climb high headland that juts out into the Adriatic Sea. The walk was just what the doctor ordered, after 2 days sheltering in the caravan with strong winds and rain. Well it is only April! The temperature today was a balmy 18°C and, after a cold night and a warm bed, we were not up until after 10:00hrs.
The car park, at above sea level, was signed as being a 1 hour only stop for the cemetery, so we moved the car into a field which we realised was for an Olive Oil farmer's guests, for when they arrived at 17:00hrs for a tasting, every day... it must be exceptional olive oil, there was room for at least 500 vehicles! I was not happy, a chain can be difficult to cut through with an old hacksaw! So when we saw others arriving and walking off up the hill, we moved back into the cemetery carpark and set off on our climb of climb to the Church we visited last time, a couple of days ago.
Initially metalled, the road followed the edge of the cemetery where it soon dissolved into a wide rough track. We followed the track up towards a point on the map called 'Tourist Information'. The board, when we arrived, wasn't there, but there was a small carpark and a signpost. We followed the signpost heading northward.
It was a marked path, red and white stripes, or more accurately, red and white stripped warning tape tied around trees and not only living, upright ones. Even a pile of rotten branches counted, but who knows for how long
The path followed an old riverbed steeper and steeper up hill, between overhanging banks, topped with trees. The geology was fascinating, how do you get a layer of large, angular rocks sandwiched between two bands of river sediment? We continued on upwards across unused waterfalls and steep rocky outcrops.
Sweat pouring into my eyes and down my back, we were finally in smelling distance of the ice-cream shop, the top of the climb of .
Sorry I was too busy to photograph the ice-creams
Refreshed, we started down via a different route aiming to visit a cave and a viewpoint on the way back to the car. The path was magic, like something out of an old book, with bright green, fresh spring growth on the oak, ash and other deciduous trees, steeped with glimpses of an azure seas and dotted with wild cyclamen and plants preparing for a hot summer by baring berries in April. With occasional glimpses of the sea, almost green with the chalk washed out by the insignificant current and tiny tides associated with the Mediterranean. We continued down towards the Southern Belvedere, overtaken by a couple of younger people who stop for nothing and disappeared as quickly as they appeared. We finally arrived, after passing a sign suggesting that we should be wearing walking boots... I was suitably dressed, as always, in shorts and (walking) sandals.
The Belvedere Sud, when we got there was hosting a mini reunion with two couples sitting admiring the spectacular views southwards over the coastal planes.
As we were about to leave, the young Italian lady sitting on the ground, just the other side of the railings, piped up
"You should take one down there"
I peered over the edge of the cliff and agreed with her...We moved on down towards the cave, advertised on the map on the phone, our main source of information, on the go, and followed the path, passing two other people going uphill.
As we approached the turning to the cave, down a gravelly slope, there was a sort of scrabbling sound from behind me, then silence. I slowly turned around to find Julia face down on the path!
"Are you OK?" I stupidly asked.
Julia was soon upright with a small graze on an elbow. After a dust down and a spin on the spot checking for holes and finding none, we continued on our way.
The path twisted between trees, up and down part time riverbeds until I started to wonder how much further. We suddenly came in view of a vertical outcrop of rock.We followed the outcrop and found the entrance to the Grotte del Mortarolo.. The Superstition
On the floor, at night, a figure of a man is seen, he walks as one living until daylight when he returns to the land of the dead.
We entered the cave, unaware of the superstition. It was amazing! The back wall, opposite the entrance was carved with a false doorway. To the right, the cave floor slowly rose to reach the ceiling but not before passing through a wider part with two windows, one round and one square. To the left, again the cave floor rose to the roof, but before it did, the cave opened up into a room. There were no ancient painting, drawings or carvings, just a few pieces of modern graffiti on the outside walls.
As we returned to the car, we spotted another place we want to visit, Sirolo, not from the campsite

Thanks Karen, We are really having fun.
You are our first comment writer and for that, you win the smelly sock, we'll keep it under wrap and key until we meet up :D [edited 2nd May 2017]
We arrived in Ancona at about 11.30hrs and parked up, at the side of the road, in a parking bay, paid small change for 3½ hours of parking and started with, what we hoped would be an eye opener.
The Anfiteatro Romano, an unfortunate and unmitigated disappointment. Locked gates, overgrown with weeds, even the signs were behind the fence.
Undeterred we headed uphill passed the Chiesa di San Gregorio Illuminatore, which was also closed, this time due to restoration. and on to the Cattedrale di San Ciriaco, with its views over the town and the ship yard. Its beautiful pink marble lion statues stood either side of the main entrance, set against the variegated marble walls, were a picture to behold. To the east side, facing the Diocesan Museum, protruded a curved chancel decorated on the exterior with cleaned Grotesques adorning the surround below the roof. As with most places at this time of day, it was closed for lunch, so we walked down a set of steps to the Piazza del Senato in front of the Palazzo Arcivescovile, and the Chiesa di San Pellegrino, then around to the Archaeological Museum. Here we took a quick look at the poorly guarded and badly maintained ruins of a Roman Thermal system, then back to the car.
At the car, I took the parking ticket we paid for off the seat of the car and placed it on the dashboard, before we climbed a flight of steps and into a park which overlooked the Amphitheatre and gave insight into the huge excavation which had been undertaken there over the preceding years. The excavation continued under the road and the houses on the opposite side of the road. Quite some Archaeological excavation.
We walked up to the top of the hill to visit the old and the new lighthouses and the Batteries used during the Italo-Turkish or Turco-Italian War, fought between the Kingdom of Italy and the Ottoman Empire from September 29, 1911, to October 18, 1912. Adjacent to the old lighthouse, which was replaced due to instability of the ground it stood on, stood a square building with a plaque commemorating Marconi's Amateur Radio 1904.
We walked on past the new lighthouse and came across the English Cemetery from the 19th Century, locked, overgrown and forgotten, then onward down to an observation platform which overlooked a large field with, what looked like, at a distance, pillars and remains of, perhaps a roman villa. We followed the track down, around the edge of the field, to the Batteria San Giuseppe Inferiore. then we struck inland and we were surprised to find that the supposed Roman Villa, was in fact the overgrown remains of a Jewish graveyard. The Jewish community in Ancona is one of the oldest Jewish Communities in Italy and was first formed back in the 10th century around 967AD.
From here we walked back into town, passing the Statue of Clemente XII, Pope from the 12 July 1730 to his death in 1740, and from there down to the docks in search of the Triumphal Arch of Trajan and the Arch of Clementino. Then finally back to the car, arriving exactly on 3½ hours

Monte Conero, a high headland between our campsite and Ancona and home to, not only the Parco Regional del Conero, a forest of mainly Holm Oaks, wild boar and an army base but also to some magnificent views, prehistoric rock carvings and an XII century church.
We left the campsite at 11:00hrs and drove the to a place that looked good for walking. We sorted out water and camera bag and set off. I clicked on the phone to mark our position on the map and tapped the wrong app. It was WhatsApp and I noticed the message I received last night... We returned to the campsite and got the tape measure out. I had promised my son Andy that I would send him my measurements for a suit for me, for his wedding.
30 minutes later we were out of the gate, just before the lunchtime curfew (13:00-15:00hrs) and were heading back to Monte Conero, this time to a different place, further up the hill. We obviously chose the correct place as the area was heaving with cars. We tried the carpark but it was full, so rather than paying the €1 per hour, we parked down the road a bit, with a load of other cars for free.
We walked up a newly tarmacked road, marked on the map as a footpath, passed the Army camp with its barbed wire fence, high gates and warning signs.
We then followed a well trodden path into the woods. The first thing of note, we happened upon by chance was a view Northwards along the coast......and straight downwards onto the sailing boats and wind surfers below. We followed the paths, on a circular route through the densely wooded slopes, until we found ourselves back at the metalled road again. I pulled out the phone and looked at the map. Not wanting to go back to the campsite too early we decided that a short detour to a castle was in order. We turned left, down hill towards a point, marked on the map as Incisioni Rupestri (Translated later as Rocky Engravings), an Archaeological site. We nearly missed it as I was looking for some Roman walls or something tangible. We spotted the narrow path with a broken branch hanging across it and after ducking under it, we climbed the path up to a large slab of rock, about 5 by 4 metres. Three Italians were there looking around the area. It turned out that mum and dad owned a small archaeological company and their six year old son had just started learning English. They showed us what they had been looking at. The beautifully chiseled channels and deep round conical holes, as well as square holes and an almost heart shaped engravings are amazing. The walk back to the car, took us passed an impromptu piece of artwork. The map informed us that there was a church, the Abbazia di San Pietro al Conero, close to where the parked, so we detoured through the carpark to visit the 11th century church with it's crypt raised presbytery and wonderfully carved pillars and singular painted wall.

We awoke in the knowledge that we were moving on, to another campsite. The title, "A Long Day" is a little misleading as I will explain at the end of today's post (no cheating!).
Just after we awoke, there was the sound of movement outside our bedroom window. The campsite had been steadily hemming us in on all sides with ancient two birth tatty caravans and, it turned out that they had placed one with it's tow hook so close to our caravan, we had to move our van so that we could empty the toilet, which we always do before leaving a campsite (It gives me 2 days without having to think about that particular chore!). We breakfasted and readied ourselves for the off, which included paying, chatting to the lovely family (the ones with the 4 year old and a dog in the Dutch caravan!) and saying our goodbyes then headed out of the gate... In the entrance, we stopped, and set up the SatNav, by motorway arriving at 11:30hrs or by normal roads arriving at 12:03hrs. There was no contest, the slow road it was.
The drive along the coast, through the costal towns of Porto San Giorgio, Porto San Elpido, Civitanova Marche and finally Porto Recanati, where we finally shouted abuse at the railway as it headed inland. Dubious of the area, after the past 4 days, we were relieved to see the entrance to the Campsite in the distance Camping BellaMare. With an area set aside for arrivals and a welcoming smile at reception, we felt reassured that the site was as pleasant as it looked.
We signed in and picked one of the many empty pitches and, after setting up, we wandered around the campsite, wondering why we hadn't come here 3 days ago.
The "A Long Day" title Explained:
Not much to explain really, the long day started after our walk around the site and ended when we went inside to get supper ready, a long day soaking up the sunshine in a relaxing atmosphere
