View by Date or Latest First Next All Entries Herculaneum - 11/12/2016 View Photo Gallery for 11/12/2016 After a day of washing, shopping and relaxing by the caravan, demolishing the beer supply, on Sunday we decided that we needed to 'do' Herculaneum. We set off on the drive through badly maintained cobble and tarmac streets past people cooking their Sunday dinner out in the sunshine on the pavement. The bars were full and the socialising was going on a pace. We arrived at the car park next to the buried site of Herculaneum, took our car park ticket from the underground carpark and climbed the stairs and walked the to the entrance gate and in to the main visitors center. After paying our €13 each, we walked around to the entrance of the site. The building with the boat in it was closed, so we walked across the bridge into the excavated area. We thought Pompeii was amazing! Herculaneum was smaller and more compact. Some of the houses were two and three stories high with some of the wooden structures charred but still in place. The harbour side and warehouses down by the old port are where they found most of the human remains. Unlike Pompeii, here in Herculaneum, the speed and temperature of the pyroclastic cloud that Vesuvius hurled at the town killed everyone instantly, removing all flesh and soft tissue in an instant. In both Pompeii and Herculaneum, the two things that surprised us more than anything was the vivid vibrant colours of the paintwork inside the buildings and how few human remains there were. The saddest thing of all, in both cities was the neglect. There is little or no money to protect the remains and, in places they were concreting over the original pavements to lay nice smooth tarmac, next to buildings that had become unstable. We entered through the same entrance and went straight through the Theatre and on to the streets which were amazing with stepping stones or speed bumps at every junction, towards the Amphitheatre. When we arrived, I have never been so disappointed. I know Pink Floyd played there, I know that many famous people have performed there, but really! The history that was hidden behind TV screens and the echo of 'The Wall' and politicians doing speeches ruined the atmosphere for me. Considering that the town was buried in an instant, most of the Amphitheatre had been purloined by successive looters, the Mafia and anyone else who wanted to build a house within the surrounding area!Anyway, we left there and continued our exploration. There wasn't a queue to get in so we proffered €30 as we had no change and, the three ladies employed to serve the customers, looked baffled and in Italian asked if we had the correct money. I searched my pockets and wallet and said that we didn't, so, without any apologies, she refused us entry! Flabbergasted, we then had to return to the campsite and hunt through the car and caravan for the 1 cent pieces until we just managed to scrape enough together. We returned to the entry booth and handed over a fist full of change to the three ladies in the kiosk, who counted it, then we were given tickets to go through to the entry the gates. At the gates the automatic barriers were broken, so another two people were employed to tear the tickets to validate entry. We walked along the southern wall of the city to enter at the Theatre entrance. I have to say that the ruins were spectacular, There were two theatres, a small one off to one side and a huge one, both with tiered seating, interlinked with passageways and and alleyways. After exploring these, we hit one of the side streets. There was too much to take in and so much to see. We spent the whole day exploring the ruined, but remarkable city, until, when we finally left at 17:00hrs we had only visited half of the things we wanted to see. A while back, someone thought that cobbles were a way forward, but what they didn't count on was the people who relayed them after working on the drains... Any how, we arrived at the campsite, Camping Spartacus and were directed to a pitch straight down from the entrance. We set up camp and then wandered across the road, literally from the campsite, to one of the entrances of the old town of Pompeii. So close, it'd be criminal not to do two days in the old town, and then there is Herculaneum as well!Spoilers!!! No comments Add a comment You will be adding a comment to this post as a guest.
