Diary: 2014 - Spain View Gallery (Added 14th December 2014) Description: Our trip through Spain as we head South for winter
Info: There are 17 diary entries to choose from.
Lumping two days together may, to some seem like a cop out, but the weather has changed, and rain and thunderstorms rule the day.
On the 13th we went for a drive, to a town where TomTom announced that there was a Carrefour, fresh milk being the main sought after ingredient on the shopping list, TomTom was wrong after a trip to the local land fill site, we turned and retraced our tracks to the Carrefour we visited a few days previously. The rain that afternoon and evening produced a lake of 3cm (1.5inches) across our pitch!
On the 14th, the rain and thunder started at 05:00 and, as I type this, it looks set to continue for the rest of the day. I have been around the caravan coiling cables and zip tying them, to reduce the various trip hazards from the WiiU, TV and two computers, let alone the charging cables for phones & Wii remotes. Now I'm sharing my seat with a tool box, it's too wet to take it back to the car as the tide seems to be in at the moment!
Decided in the end to visit the campsite restaurant for Paella, well worth the trip

A day for a walk or two, but first washing! We finally left the site at 12:30hrs for the nearby town of El Rocio. The town is, on the whole, empty at this time of year, however, 1 million people descend on this strange place, most on horseback. The roads are sand, the buildings look old, but many are quite modern. Every house has a bar outside to tie the horses to. The inland lake it is situated beside, is a haven for a host of wild birds and, in places it could be called beautiful, however the detritus left by the last gathering was a great shame, plastic and other disposable drinking containers littered the streets, cigarette buts, by the tens of thousands, led to a feeling of decay. A shame really as it is probably really great fun.[View Gallery]
After returning to the caravan, we changed in to sandals and shorts and drove the 12 miles to the beach for a walk along the deserted beach, bare footed in the golden sands with the Atlantic ocean lapping at our ankles. Idyllic!

The plan was to walk in to El Rocio and have a look around then drive to the beach for a walk along the deserted sandy beaches. In actuality, we did a load of washing, cleaned out the workings of the 4 year old 12/230v coolbox, which normally lives outside, clicking and groaning its way through life. It now sings, sweet as an electric motor can do, as I have moved the wire it was rubbing against so that it doesn't grind quite so loudly!
A day off was call for, if cleaning and general maintenance can be described as a day off, so beer was opened, tool boxes emptied, hoovers filled with sand and emptied more than once and a fair amount of sunbathing was factored in.
At one point we had a crowd of sparrows watching us, which brightened an otherwise glorious day!

Cool night but it soon warmed up, wall to wall sunshine from dawn to dusk. At 11:30hrs, we headed off to the Carrefour, a quick shop and refuel then back to the caravan and off on a bike ride to the beach and back [See our ride]. Surprisingly hard work for a 24 mile bike ride, it felt like uphill both ways, but the wind was in our face all the way home. Beers, shower, supper and bed

Set off on our second longest trip of the tour, 206 miles (336km) through flat planes and rolling hills, views stretched before us for, what seemed like 100's of miles. The campsite, when we arrived, through the wrong entrance(!), was, surprisingly, fairly empty. We were put on pitch 106, which when we got there was taken by a French camper van driven by an elderly English couple, we didn't complain and pitched up on 107.

The aim for today was to go for a ride on the much neglected bikes. The Temperature at 11:00 was 7C so we donned our winter cycling clothes and headed off on a pre-planned route taking in the Caceres by-pass then out into the countryside. The ride, 22 miles had a few surprises including a group "Ola" from a bunch of red clad Spanish cyclists and two birds of prey which we can not identify. [View Ride]

Today we thought that we'd go for a walk around Caceres old town to see what all the fuss was about. After driving the 3 miles to the free car park, we then realised that we had no idea which direction to take and, after careful thought, we returned to the campsite, picked up the Garmin and returned, once again and parked in the (free) car park, next to the town park, and walked through a residential area to the Plaza Mayor, which stands on the edge of the old city walls. There was a bring and buy sale going on, so we circumnavigated the hoards of people buying tat, and made for the city gates.

The steps up to the gates were being held hostage by a family of Spaniards wanting to take photographs of each other and in groups of 2's. 3's and finally we photo bombed them and passed by. The old wall and buildings were awesome and we were soon in the main square, with a church in the centre. We turned left and entered a building which had loads of people going in and out, and found, by mistake, the tourist office. The tourist office didn't seem to have a desk, however loads of small TV screens showed pictures of different places in the area which could be visited. The main entrance hall, in comparison, was filled, I mean filled, with a huge model village of Nazareth, including washing on washing lines, goats, sheep, people going on their merry way and, of course, baby Jesus, with Mary and Joseph leaning over the manger and electric cables leading, one hoped, to a light to light the scene at night, rather than kick start the event and animate the characters. A lot of thought had gone in to make this as human a depiction of the birth of Christ, that either of us had ever seen.

At 3pm, it seemed that we were no longer welcome and were ushered out on to the street, we turned back to take a look around the church, the entrance was barred by a man who informed us that we should return at 5pm, as the church also did not open its doors to anyone between 3 and 5pm. We walked around the old town admiring the architecture or Roman, Christian, Moor, Jewish, Muslim and many different beliefs which had shaped the city. Unfortunately, there were no signs in English, but if you wanted to use your data roaming allowance, there were scan-able squares which would guide you around some of the town on your mobile phone.

The Walk back to the car was uneventful and, we were soon back at the van with a beer in hand watching the sun set on another great day in Spain. [View Walk] [Gallery]

Today we planned a day out to view the famous Vultures in the Montgrage National Park, about 50 miles away from the campsite, but first, washing! One load to day and another tomorrow should see us through and at 3's a load, that's not too expensive.
We finally left the campsite at 11:15hrs, and headed on our way, taking the scenic route across the planes rather than the faster route up the motorway. The sight of snow capped mountains getting nearer and nearer set my heart pounding, hoping that the park was in the foot hills. It wasn't, but the mountains were spectacular.
We parked in the car park down by the main road, and donned walking boots. The walk was easy, with old and young people "Ola" and "Buenos"ing each other as they climbed the 600 feet to the top.
Words can not describe the beauty, but we stayed on top for quite some time watching and absorbing the vista.

We awoke this morning to 2.5°C and thick fog. The temperature stayed below 5°C until we departed with a gift of a baguette, at 11.00hrs.
We drove through thick clouds and for about an hour, until the sun broke through. we were amongst cloud and snow capped mountains, beautiful views, lakes and farm land then down on to the planes with olive plantations.
As we headed South, the sun came out and the temperature rose steadily. The Campsite Caceces (Pronounced Cathereth) is very different to any campsite I have ever been to. Each pitch is furnished with a shed, in which is a shower, a toilet and a sink. The website says 5 amps electricity, the reception says 10Amps and the fuse box says 16Amps, we'll see how much we can get out of it!
Off to the restaurant for supper and a drink. This is the life!

A pleasant meal in rathe stark surroundings.

We WILL get to see the cathedral today, but first we need milk and fuel, for our tea and departure, in that order!
The Garmin, after numerous and spiteful support emails finally installed the map of Spain which we purchased a week and a half ago, so we'll try it out later and I'll post a link to the results later.
We headed off to town at around 11:45hrs and, ignoring TomTom, we drove through the local town and approached Salamanca from a different direction, just because we could, nothing exceptional to report!
We arrived at the Supermarket picked up fresh milk, mince for tomorrows supper and a couple of baguettes. Next we hit the fuel station... 1€,15.8¢s a litre that is a record for this trip, equivalent to 90p per litre for diesel, it gets better every day!
The previous evening we had searched Google Maps for a potential free parking place, so we headed there next, and found loads of available and free places to park, result!
We headed across the Rio Tormes using the Puente Romano, to head straight for the impressive Cathedral.
After a stroll around the exterior, we took the plunge and 4€.75¢ each later, we donned the audio guides and headed off around the amazing cathedral. I could go in to a shed load of details, but, I'm not going to, you'll have to visit, but here is a photograph. [ visit the full gallery]
After a 2 hour walk around the Cathedrals, Old and New, we walked down to the Moorish in design Library, then back to the car View Walk

3.5C through the night, I was frozen, thank God that Julia had the foresight to bring her Yak blanket! We finally awoke at 9.30am after a fitful nights sleep. The showers were what the doctor ordered with strong lances of hot water chasing the cold away.
Today we would visit town, if we could get the energy up to do so!
at 12:30hrs we finally set of in the car to explore the town. It was busy, old and when we finally found somewhere to stop, we both needed the loo, so when we found that the parking slot we had picked was reserved, we headed back to the caravan and some lunch.
The rest of the day didn't happen! Sometimes these days have to appear, we relaxed and I sorted out the website. Maximum temperature today was 9.7C!

2nd December 2014 - Camping Ruta de la Plata, Salamanca
We left Burgos in the drizzle with the thermometer informing us that it was 7.9C. Still in sandals, I was considering giving up the idea of wearing shorts all year round!
We set off at about 10:30hrs for our next campsite, 'Camping Ruta de la Plata' on the outskirts of Salamanca. A World Heritage City, with twin cathedrals sharing the same bell tower... I may have to pay to get in!!!
The drive was easy, only one major road work where they were building a huge bridge across the motorway. The construction looked complicated and crossing from one carriageway to the other for a bit of 'two waying', made even the most cavalier of us slow to 5kph (2mph) to cross the ditch to the opposite carriageway!
The campsite, Camping Ruta de la Plata, when we arrived, was empty, but on our heals arrived six other outfits including: a Dutch man and his wife who had travelled all over including Senegal, with their eyes on South America and beyond; a grumpy English couple or two... at this point we gave up talking and went shopping!
The small Carrefour in town had a resident beggar trying hard to extract money to protect the car from vandals in the car park, we ignored him and moved on, there were plenty of other people for him to pester.
FRESH MILK! chicken, for two meals and de-salted cod for the next three meals. [View Gallery]

Today we plan to walk in to the city and take a look around the Cathedral and Castle as they have been recommended to us by loads of people. We set of down the footpath from the campsite to the City, down the edge of the Rio Arlanzón, a large and reasonably fast flowing river on the Southern edge of Burgos. The first thing that struck us was the number of people that were walking up and down the footpath on a Monday morning, literally hundreds of men and women, walking, running, jogging and cycling, most talking to a friend or companion, others just walking. This must be a good thing, everyone walking, just for the sheer enjoyment of it. The footpath was marked out in 100 metre stretches by markers on the river retaining wall so that the people taking exercise knew when to stop
The city, when we finally made it there, was a little run down, loads of closed and boarded up shops, hopefully just because it was winter. There is a lot of graffiti everywhere, some good pieces of artwork and lettering, others, just vandalism, but if there is nothing for the youth to do apart from cycle up and down a footpath, I know that I'd get bored rather quickly!
We finally found the Cathedral, a squat building with a charge of 7€ each to gain admission. If there is one thing we do not like, it's being forced to pay to enter a church or religious building, we declined the ticket and decided to look from the outside. The building has been remodelled a few times since it's first incarnation as a shrine back before the start of the building of the current structure in 1221. The most recent incarnation is clean and obviously well maintained. Another time we may consider paying out, but for now, we decided to climb the hill to the castle.
We headed up hill, and soon were approaching the walls, we stopped at a view point overlooking the city, an amazing view with fine architecture. We continued upward to the gates, 3€s each, not to be grumbled at, but it was closed, only open on Saturday's, Sunday's and Bank Holidays!
Back down in the town again, we headed back towards the campsite and the warmth of a gas fire as the thermometer showed 8C on our return.

Avery wet and cold start to the day and the rain continued until around 14:00hrs.
A trip to fill up a gas bottle proved that the re-fillable gas bottle was worth getting. €8.31 for 14kg bottle that equates to £6.61 rather than Calor Gas's £24+ for a non re-fillable bottle.
Spent most of the rest of the day programming the website so that the comments now work.

A walk down to the first road bridge, half a mile away proved to be the only exercise we got, and after watching the 'Chocolat' DVD, we were in bed by 22:45hrs.

We awoke to theexpected rain and were hitched up and ready for the off by 10:45hrs.
The drive, once again uneventful, took us to Burgos, down the East side of the Picos de Europa mountains.
We arrived at 13:45hrs pitched up and drove to the Carrefour to buy milk (and 80+ euros of goodies to keep the wolf from the door).

26th November 2014 We needed food, so we looked at a map and chose the nearest large town, Llanes, and headed towards the northern Spanish coast in our search. Llanes is a relatively small town, and our hope of finding somewhere that had a supermarket, was thwarted. The town, while pretty, and well worth a visit, had ways and means of sending us packing! Every time we got near the centre, the one way system spat us out of another part of town. in the end, on the fourth attempt, I took a turn to the right and we were soon twisting our way through the outskirts of the town until we reached the sea and a beautiful cove.
The sandy beach is called Playa de Tor. We parked the car and walked across the sand, I even took my sandals off and paddled in the sea, before climbing a flight of steps up through the jagged rocks to the cliff top some 20 feet up! and on to the Punta Radon[See the gallery]
The cliffs and the ground shook to the power of the waves eating in to the limestone rocks. The sound and vibrations caused by the waves "Woomphing" under our feet was exhilarating to say the least.
After a short walk, we decided to head back to the caravan via the scenic route, a few miles longer, but very pretty. We stopped off about half way up the gorge, in a lay-bye, and walked down to an ancient bridge over the Rio Casao. As we clambered down the muddy slope to the bridge, we heard a loud "Crack!"! A few seconds later, a rock, the size of a football, dislodged by the rain, weather and time, hurtled down the mountainside, leaping and bounding it's merry way towards us and, with a final leap, it landed with a loud, deep "SPLOOOOSH" in the river about 50metres away from where we were standing, spectacular! [View Gallery]
So the day started badly and after about 100miles of driving, we saw a rock fall off a mountain. Must do that again sometime
27th November 2014
Time for a walk. As the Garmin map wouldn't download because of naff internet connections, and the only walking map of Spain we could find locally didn't cover the area we were in, we had to rely on the car SatNav map to find a couple of lakes we wanted to see. I marked the position on the TomTom and off we set. Sooner than we thought, we were instructed to turn right, down a narrow lane just wide enough to fit between the houses, across a very narrow bridge, then up a 25% (1:4) concrete road, cross hatched to aid adhesion over the winter months, and onward, up into the hills. Just after one hairpin bend, we encountered a tractor and trailer coming the other way, I managed to reverse into a narrow muddy track to let him past, the, unhindered by other traffic, we continued on up the foot hills as the track became narrower and rougher. After about 5 kilometres, we passed a parked car in one of the few wider sections of the road, then the concrete track became a mud track with potholes and jagged limestone walls either side, not more than 2 inches (5cm) from each wing mirror. We stopped and reversed back to the parked car and after making a 17 point turn, avoiding cars, walls, trees and a drop of about 20 feet, we headed back around the last corner and parked ourselves so that any cars, tractors or other goods vehicles could pass, donned out walking boots and set of to continue the 3km to the end of the track.
Thank goodness we didn't go any further with the car as, when we rounded the first corner after we had turned the car around, we encountered a gate, if we had been in the car, we wouldn't of been able to get out to open it! We went through the gat and down a muddy track to the bottom of the valley then up the other side to the end of the track. No sign of any lakes, but there was no telling how big the lakes were or if they were hidden in the bottom of any of the river valleys before us. As we had no map with us except for the one that which showed everything from 50 miles up, we decided that we'd stick to the tracks and keep a group of shelters in view at all times. We dropped down in to the valley following a track, over a bridge and up the other side, in to a field. We walked the boundaries of the field, than resigned ourselves to the fact that I had entered the wrong place in to the SatNav. The road looked the same shape, the position of where we were in comparison to the campsite was correct, so what had gone wrong. We returned to the car. [View our walk][View Gallery]
On return to the car and after descending the single tracked road to the main road, we took a trip Westward, and after about 5km stopped in a turning to see where we should go... "Look" said Julia, "That sign post points the way to where we wanted to walk, it says 15km!". Head held in shame, I admitted my failure, and we decided to go and have a look, and I'm really glad we did.
The drive up the valley towards Covadonga, gave some indication of the importance of the area, there were numerous car parks, restaurants, hotels and lodges lining the road. When we finally saw the majestic Santuario de Covadonga Baslica, dominating the sky line. It's towers and architecture set off by the towering mountains surrounding it were fantastic to see.
After a brief stop in the car park, we decided to drive up to the lakes, about 8km away, and what an 8km it was! Sheer drops, sheer cliffs, extraordinary views, places where even I as driver had to watch the cliff rather than the scenery with fear that I might fall off! The rain arrived just as we rounded a corner and saw the snow capped mountains. Wow!
We drove up to the lakes and enjoyed the bracing mountain air and cold drizzle it offered us for about 10 minutes, then headed back down and home for tea. A brilliant day out.
28th November 2014
We still needed milk and a few odds and ends, so we headed back to the coast, this time heading West along the coast to a pretty town called Ribadesella. The supermarket failed to supply fresh milk, so we gave that idea up and decided to use UHT milk instead. We stopped on the water front and watch impressive cloud formations roll off the mountains. Later we drove back to Llanes and past Playa de Tor and on up along the coast to the East where we hoped to catch the bufones (water spouts) on the Costa de los bufones, but the tide, sea conditions and wind conspired to provide a wonderful view and a plethora of midges, but no bufones.

<p>After an uneventful drive through the undulating and very pointy hills of Northern Spain, our route of some 200 miles, took an inland leg for the last 50 miles, and the sights were breath taking! Vertical sided canyons, with a large river to keep us entertained, huge mountains towering over us, quite breath taking!
We arrived at the campsite at 3.30ish were welcomed, with open arms, as one of 3 units on site, 2 English and a French family. We managed to get set up and sorted out before the rain set in along with FREE WiFi... Huzzah!!! That was short lived!

A walk down to the first road bridge, half a mile away proved to be the only exercise we got, and after watching the 'Chocolat' DVD, we were in bed by 22:45hrs.

[View Ride]
Idyllic!
